FURIA upsets Team Liquid with 2-1 Victory

FURIA have picked up their third victory in Group D of ESL Pro League Season 16, defeating Liquid 2-1 after the teams won each other’s map picks in one-sided fashion before the Brazilian side ran away with the Vertigo decider. Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato continued to be a shining beacon for his team, superb rifle work helping to power FURIA to victory. The 3-0 record still isn’t enough to guarantee them a playoff berth though.

No part of Liquid’s Mirage pick went right for them, it was only toward the end of the half that Liquid recovered ever so slightly, managing to put three on the board, but the meager handful of rounds offered little comfort in the end. Mareks “YEKINDAR” Gaļinskis’s best efforts to pull things back in the second half only served to close the gap between the two teams somewhat, but continued excellence from KSCERATO ensured the victory for his team.

It was the opposite scenario that unfolded on Inferno, Liquid giving Andrei “arT” Piovezan’s men a taste of their own medicine with a formidable defense of their own. A 7-1 lead was established by Liquid before FURIA began to claw some rounds back, garnering five by the break, but Keith “NAF” Markovic did them no favors in the second half as he took firm control of the proceedings to quickly help Liquid lock down the map win, 16-7.

Now onto the 3rd map, a completely lackluster passive CT side from Liquid and excellent calling from FURIA left almost no doubt as to who would come out on top of the map. Once the sides switched over, FURIA wasted no time in cruising to victory with a more aggressive stance on the defense, which paid off in spades by giving Liquid no room to get the ball rolling on their T side. It was a 16-4 win that went the way of the Brazilian team to net them the series victory.

Evil Geniuses took home their first win in ESL Pro League since Season 13 with a commanding 2-0 victory over Eternal Fire. The North American squad made light work of their Turkish opponents, moving past Engin “MAJ3R” Küpeli and company 16-9 on Overpass before turning things up a notch with a 16-4 thrashing on Dust2 to hand Eternal Fire a 0-3 record in Group D.

The series kicked off on Evil Geniuses’ pick of Overpass, with the North American squad looking tuned in as they ran up an overpowering 6-2 lead to start their T-side. The Turks, spurred on by a strong individual performance from Ismailcan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş, did wake up, though, adding a few scrappy rounds wins to bring the deficit back to a more manageable 5-7. Evil Geniuses were able to maintain their hold on the game in spite of Eternal Fire’s recovery.

Evil Geniuses’ lead was further extended once the second half got started, the North American roster laying down the law as they went on a five-round spree to go up 14-6. Eternal Fire slowly began to find their footing, winning three crucial rounds in a row to keep themselves in the fight. Alas, any chance of a Turkish comeback was quickly put to bed, as Sanzhar “neaLaN” Iskhakov gunned down four on the A site in the final two rounds to lock in a 16-9 victory, their first map win of the tournament thus far.

Evil Geniuses put up a strong defensive line to get Dust2 underway, finding five rounds on the trot before Eternal Fire could find a way to break through. The Turkish roster’s lone round win in the sixth did little to change the course of the game, with Evil Geniuses sitting firmly in the driver’s seat at 12-3 up by the interval. Evil Geniuses didn’t break a sweat once on the T-side, clinching the second pistol round of the map before converting the following two rounds with ease to reach match point, 15-3.

This encounter is definitely going to be pretty one-sided, especially after seeing FURIA being capable enough to take down Team Liquid. At this point, it seems that Cloud9 might be the only ones who have enough firepower to take down the Brazilian Squad.
