Can G2 Bounce Back from their Losing Streak?

While we didn’t know what to exactly expect from G2’s recent roster changes, it was still very surprising to see them drop their first 2 games of the event. The first game being against Team Liquid, in which G2 were the clear favorites according to the CSGO odds. The 2nd one was a much closer fight between them and NaVi, though the CIS team wasn’t playing with Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev, who is the absolute best player in the lineup. This loss left a sour taste in the mouths of G2, who finished bottom of Group B in their debut event with their new roster.

We can take a close look at how the encounter went. G2 started their defensive effort cleanly, drumming up an opening 6-0 lead thanks to an overpowering individual performance from NiKo. An aggressive play in Middle by NaVi in the 7th caught their opponent’s off-guard, enabling the CIS side to finally get the ball rolling as they brought the score back to 8-5. A war of timeouts soon ensued and G2 was able to use this to pull ahead, snatching the remaining two rounds to post a comfortable 10-5 lead at half-time.

NaVi began the tall order of mounting their comeback attempt at the start of the second half as ElectroNic and co. brought the map to within two, at 12-10. Consistently strong retakes by NaVi followed, enough to allow the CIS side to take the lead for the first time and go 15-13 up. NaVi completed a 4v3 retake on B site in the final round to complete the comeback and move on in the event. This exposed that G2 has a lot of things to work on if they want to keep their run going deeper into the tournament.

BIG Lost Twice to Heroic

BIG kicked off their BLAST Premier Fall Groups run with a 13-16 loss to Heroic, a result that we correctly predicted in one of our latest CSGO. Heroic knocked down BIG to the lower bracket, where they would face a renewed roster in Evil Geniuses. Clearly BIG were the favorites heading into their series against EG as the North American squad hasn’t shown any kind of positive results in a long time now. The Germans managed to pick up a very convincing 16-8 win over the Geniuses, which meant they would move on to the lower bracket final where they had to play Heroic once again.

It’s undeniable that Heroic is one of the strongest teams at the tournament, and not too long ago they took down 2-0 BIG in a very dominating manner, which is why, once again, they were the favorites. The biggest issue for BIG is their slow-paced offense, which has cost them many games in the past, though if they find a workaround, they might be able to keep their Fall Groups run going. Fortunately for them, Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz and Nils “k1to” Gruhne have looked pretty good, especially when playing on CT, which could end up being their strongest tool against G2.

G2 vs BIG Game Information

G2 vs BIG Predictions

This is definitely a tough match to predict, but if we take a look at how the seeding games went, it’s safe to say that BIG have the upper hand heading into this match. BIG has looked more solid throughout the event, showing more synergy, a deeper map pool, and 5 fraggers, which is why it seems really worth it to go with them.

Unless G2 somehow manages to fix all of their glaringly obvious issues, it’s very likely that they won’t be able to pick up a single map, though that might be a stretch. If everything goes accordingly, BIG should be advancing to the semifinals, where they would be facing Team Vitality and securing a spot in the last chance bracket.
