HLE Esports was considered to be one of the favorites to win Worlds this year after their incredible performance in the LCK Summer Finals. However they have unexpectedly lost several matches, with their record standing at 5-3. The match that truly worried HLE fans was versus Flyquest, where they actually lost 1 game in the best of five series.
Said series had all the signs of an upset in favor of Flyquest, with small mistakes being the difference for HLE. There is a clear weakness in the Korean side, their mid game. HLE has highly benefited from Peanut’s early game decision making, recording +1242 gold differential at 15 minutes, however this decisiveness goes missing after that. Dragon and Herald fights have become the bane of their existence, consistently losing focus in teamfight targets.
Thankfully they still have that keen eye for opportunity Korean squads seem to hone throughout their careers. Ultimately winning in clutch situations during the late game to close out the series. Nevertheless, this technically does not work against top tier teams such as Gen.G where they lost 2-1 earlier in the event. It’s incredible to see fans still doubt BLG’s ability to perform on the international stage. Yes BLG is always coming into Worlds as a top contender and ultimately disappointing, however they have enough experience in their roster to trump any unaware teams. With the format being a best of five series, BLG has a plethora of chances to figure out the early shenanigans from Peanut.
There are 2 champions HLE will have to ban to avoid losing, Elk’s Ezreal and Knight’s Ahri, both of these have consistently scaled faster than expected and ultimately explode a teamfight in their favor during the mid game. Not much is needed for BLG to pull off the upset, if HLE does not manage to get an early lead, they can just wait to outperform them after 25 minutes.
