Creativity, the key or their demise?

Mad Lions Koi has seen a plethora of ups and downs this year, however they somehow managed to push themselves into the LEC Season Finals Round 3 where they lost against G2 Esports. Their last LEC series showcased what makes MDK unique, their creative picks, which is ultimately a double edge sword.

This time around they will start their Worlds journey against an extremely aggressive side, VKE. It is not an ideal situation for the European side, as they are known for a shaky early game, with their CS differential standing at -0.3 before 15 minutes. As for their strengths, MDK’s adaptability is a key factor for why they pushed so high in the LEC Finals. From triple champion flex, nine unique mid lane champions, and 6 different AP junglers, you never know where MDK will decide to lock in their picks.

Ultimately, we expect surprises from the European side, which might catch inexperienced teams such as VKE off guard. Odds stand at 1.11 for MDK to take the match.

New to the international stage

VKE is a rather new organization to the League of Legends scene, with this being their first international appearance. However, the VCS region is well known for being THE dark horse at Worlds, usually stealing games from LPL/LCK favorites. VKE arrived at Worlds after finishing second in the VCS Summer Playoffs, losing to veterans GAM 3-0.

The region’s style continues to be prevalent, absolute early game onslaught. Boasting a 70% win ratio when ahead at 15 minutes is not easy, but thanks to their average +1059 gold before the same period, VKE has become one of the most dominant early game sides domestically.

Will this playstyle work against more experienced teams? Well we will see it first hand in this match. VKE champion pool is quite big as well, but their playstyle is obvious at first glance. The pairing of skirmish heavy top laners, scaling junglers, AD mid laners, self sufficient bot laners, is what they always showcase in the draft. We expect some fine tuning to this formula, but no true change for the tournament.

Ultimately, VKE is considered the underdog for the matchup, with odds standing at 6.26 for them to win the series.
