Can Movistar Riders Keep the Cinderella Run Alive?
After taking down Vitality in a best-of-3 series, the Spaniards secured themselves a spot in the IEM Cologne playoffs which are going to be played at Lanxess Arena. But Vitality isn’t the only team that has fallen against the Movistar Riders. This last victory adds to a hot streak of good outcomes for the Riders, who arrived into Cologne after hoisting a trophy on home soil in Valencia over MIBR, Sprout, and Outsiders at the ESL Challenger at DreamHack Valencia 2022.
Unluckily for them, NaVi stopped them right in their tracks in the group A winner finals after 3 very intense games. While the result was expected as the CSGO betting sites projected, Movistar Riders still put up a really good fight against their CIS counterparts. The best performing players were Sunpayus with a monster showing and mopoz too, making history going to Lanxess arena as the first spanish team to do it. NaVi simply showed to be the better team that day, but considering how convincing Movistar Riders looked on the first map, NaVi can’t sleep on their laurels against them if they get to meet again.

If we look at the stats, a good part of SunPayus’ rating are a result from his amazing 47% survival rate, but the 23-year-old Spaniard is still deserving of praise for having 6 maps above a 1.30 rating in Cologne if we include the two against Vitality in the play-in. One of the main reasons why this guy survives so much is his role. SunPayus is throwing 0.91 flashbangs a round in the main event and blinding opponents for an average of 2.15 seconds per round. He is an effective ‘support AWPer’ whilst keeping up with kills fairly well, allowing players like mopoz to do his job more effectively.
Team Liquid Survived the Lower Bracket after 3 Straight Wins

00 Nation, Cloud9, and FURIA, all of those teams ended up falling against a Team Liquid that was looking for redemption after losing to Team Spirit in their opening match. While the Brazilians gave TL a run for their money, we didn’t see the North American representatives struggle much against Cloud9 or FURIA. Their convincing 2-0 victories over some of the strongest contenders in the tournament should give them some confidence coming into their series against the Riders, though this is not going to be an easy challenge.
The team captained by Nicholas “nitr0” Cannella is feeling lucky to have Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski with them, who is currently having his best statistical LAN event since the pandemic with a 1.27 rating so far. The addition of Mareks “YEKINDAR” Gaļinskis in Richard “shox” Papillon’s place to EliGE’s Liquid squad is seemingly temporary, at least for now, but if they are able to keep things going, we might end up seeing Yekindar as a full-time TL player.
We can’t forget about Josh “oSee” Ohm who is growing into his role at Liquid and his 1.15 rating so far in Cologne is a sign of promise, especially because North America has lacked a good AWPer for a long time. Some might think that the NA squad right now is going through a honeymoon phase with Yekindar, but in reality, all the role changes they did look like a perfect fit for them. If they can put up their best performance against the Spanish dark horse, then their chances to reach the semifinals where they would square up against FaZe might be greater than expected.

Movistar Riders vs Team Liquid Predictions
These two teams don’t get many chances to play against each other as they are from 2 different regions. The last time they met was back in March at the ESL Pro League Season 15, and Movistar Riders came up on top with a 2-1 victory. While the Spaniards haven’t made a single roster change in a while, Team Liquid is looking like a completely new team now with Yekindar on the field.
This is definitely going to be a fight of who can have a greater impact for their team between SunPayus and EliGe. One of the beauties about esports betting is that you can’t underestimate just how powerful Cinderella runs are, especially in CSGO betting. What’s so special about Movistar Riders journey in this tournament is that they are not necessarily relying on catching their opponents off-guard, they are actually playing some solid Counter Strike.
I expect this to be a very close series, but ultimately, I see the Spanish team coming up on top. It’s the perfect opportunity to go with them, but considering how Team Liquid looked during their lower bracket run, I also expect this series to go to the 3rd map.
