Elite Field at Players
The Players Championship is the biggest golf tournament in the world outside of the four majors.
Despite not holding major status, it’s considered the “unofficial fifth major” so the world’s best players embark on Sawgrass this week.
The likes of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and recent Arnold Palmer winner Scottie Scheffler will tee it up.
Golf betting odds are available for every player in the field and we look at the best wagering options for The Players.
Scheffler Seeking Back-to-Back
It’s not a bad option to bet on the hottest golfer in the field and that’s Scheffler after his win at Bay Hill.
The American was considered the best player not to win on the PGA Tour, but with two wins in his last three tournaments, he’s the man to be on this week.
Scheffler showed composure on the back nine at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to sneak past Viktor Hovland, so he has shown an ability to handle pressure on the big stage.
We’re hoping that he can recover physically in time to play Sawgrass, which isn’t as demanding as Bay Hill.
“To be completely honest with you, right now I’m exhausted. This course is a total beatdown trying to play. I’m very pleased I didn’t have to play any extra holes today,” Scheffler told CNN.com.
The sportsbook has Scheffler at +2500. He’s one of the biggest movers following his win and we think he’s good enough to win consecutive PGA Tour titles.
Given the way he’s playing, we’d much rather invest our money on Scheffler at over double the price of current +1100 favorite Rahm.
Pick: Scottie Scheffler +2500
Schauffele Due a Big Win
Xander Schauffele is long becoming a player who is always in contention but never seems to win.
The American Ryder Cup player is one of the best in the world, but he needs a statement win to put him in the upper echelon and it could come at The Players.
This tournament has often been a launching pad for players on the cusp of greatness, so that plays into the hands of the 28-year-old, who chose not to play Bay Hill.
It’s a decision that could pay dividends at Sawgrass and he often plays his best on the big occasions.
Schauffele owns nine top-10 finishes in majors and we think his game suits the course.
Betting online markets have Schauffele at +2800 to win, so he has his supporters and he’s worth having on your ticket.
Pick: Xander Schauffele +2800
McIlroy to Bury Demons
It was a tough weekend at the Arnold Palmer for McIlroy, who believes the course wasn’t playing fairly.
After shooting -7 in his opening round, McIlroy was eyeing another PGA Tour win, but he had to settle for T13 after a disastrous weekend.
“I feel punch-drunk,” McIlroy said. “The weekend, it’s like crazy golf. You just don’t get rewarded for good shots. I’m hitting good shots. I’m swinging the club well. I’m chipping well. I’m putting well. But it can knock your confidence whenever the conditions are like this.
“I don’t mind golf courses being penalizing when you miss, but it’s not rewarding good shots. I think that’s where it starts to get across the line.”
He missed the cut at The Players last year, so he’ll be keen to turn that result around. He’s hitting the ball well enough to be a factor, so we’re backing him in.
The +2000 golf odds are worth taking and he’s getting close to a win, so he’s a value betting option for The Players.
Pick: Rory McIlroy +2000
Show Loyalty to Tringale
Backing Cameron Tringale hasn’t paid off … yet.
The American came close a few times earlier this season, but it has been a long road for those who have stuck with the talented player.
He might be winless on the PGA Tour, but Tringale could be worth having on your ticket at The Players.
Tringale struggled at Bay Hill, but he’s a much better player on a pitch-and-putt course like Sawgrass. He showed that when recording a T13 finish at the Genesis Invitational, so include him as a rough pick.
Bettors get +15000, so he’s worth a small wager.
