Bettor’s Report: What Happened in Golf in 2023?

Betting golf markets were available all year, and there were some crowning moments in 2023.

It was one of the more interesting years in golf, from surprise winners, LIV golf drama, Netflix specials, and much more.

We look back at the biggest moments, including all four major winners, Ryder Cup drama, and the FedEx Cup.

LIV Makes Statement

The LIV Tour made some waves in 2023, including Brooks Koepka winning the PGA Championship.

For those who bet on golf, Koepka was a good pick after his good performance at the Masters, despite blowing a final round lead to Jon Rahm.

Rahm wasn’t with LIV at the time, so we won’t count the Masters win as a victory for LIV, but they made a statement at the PGA Championship.

The American showed why he’s one of the best players in the game, securing his fifth major championship.

It made the PGA Tour and Jay Monahan shake in their boots, and Koepka is helping LIV Golf rise to new levels. Without players like him, the likes of Rahm wouldn’t be joining.

Considering Koepka’s injury troubles, winning a major in 2023 was a huge achievement, and it can’t be understated as one of the best performances.

Rahm Fires Early

2023 has been a significant year for the Spanish sensation, commencing with his triumph at the Masters in Augusta.

He delivered an impressive performance in the fourth and final round to surpass Koepka, who didn’t play aggressively enough on Sunday.

Rahm was seen as one of the poster boys for the PGA Tour. However, his recent departure for a massive price has shaken the golf world.

In a recent tweet, he expressed the joy of spending quality time with his young family and acknowledged the financial aspect.

We’re not surprised he left the PGA Tour. Players aren’t enjoying how it’s being run, and Rahm is a massive loss.

We look forward to seeing him play on the LIV Tour, where his golf odds are likely to be short.

Hovland Becomes Cult Hero

Viktor Hovland captured the affection of the golfing community with his victory in the 2023 FedEx Cup.

While the Norwegian golfer had long been a fan favorite, his performance had not always reflected his potential, but he looked good when running down sportsbook favorite Scottie Scheffer to win the big prize.

Hovland not only claimed the prestigious title but also secured a substantial amount of prize money, which could be enough to see him stay with the PGA Tour, despite rumors suggesting otherwise.

His performance at the Ryder Cup, which was taken out by Europe, was masterful.

A lighthearted post-Ryder Cup photo surfaced, featuring a lone Hovland amidst the wives and girlfriends of fellow players. This amusing snapshot instantly propelled him into superstardom, earning him the status of one of the world’s most eligible bachelors.

We expect a big 2024 for Hovland, and he was one of the best sport betting wagers for golf fans this year.

American Score Upset Wins

Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman weren’t favored with betting online markets to win the U.S. Open and Open Championship.

Clark had some form entering the U.S. Open when winning the Wells Fargo Championship against a good field, but not many expected him to win a couple of weeks later on the biggest stage.

The 30-year-old enjoyed being the underdog.

“Obviously I put my own pressure on myself, but yeah, I guess it’s nice being the underdog,” Clark said after the final round. “It was great walking by hearing a lot of people chant for Rickie’s name because it kind of fueled the fire underneath me that I could do it.”

Another upset winner was Brian Harman in the Open Championship. He led from the outset, which is a rare sight in modern golf.

Despite not being one of the most liked golfers on the PGA Tour, Harman earned the respect of the golfing public with his performance.
