Duel Could Emerge in Senior Players Championship

Stricker, Alker Co-Favorites to Win Title

The Senior Players Championship tees off this week and it could be a two-player race between New Zealand’s Steven Alker and America’s Steve Stricker.

They are on the same line of betting at +450 with the closest player being Miguel Angel Jimenez at +1000 with golf betting markets.

U.S. Senior Open champion Padraig Harrison is a notably missing from the field as he prepares for The Open Championship at St. Andrews, so the Senior Players Championship is there for the taking.

Stricker Ready for Run

Stricker made a run for the U.S. Senior Open when finishing second behind Harrington and that form could trickle over to Firestone this week.

The 55-year-old, who owns 12 PGA Tour and eight Champions Tour victories, shot -6 in the final round and that puts him right in the mix for the Players.

He is the current +450 equal favorite, so expectations are high and he could chase down the leaders if he’s within a few shots of the lead heading into the weekend.

“It’s tough to lead from the front,” Harrington told Sports Illustrated after his U.S, Senior Open win. “It’s even tougher when it’s Steve Stricker behind you. He tends to have one on me. I’m happy enough to get it done in the end.”

Stricker was trying to make a run, which could have forced Harrington into making an error.

“After I made birdie at 14 I heard someone say, ‘Well, we’ve got a game now,’ or something like that. I had a feeling I was getting close,” Stricker said. “And I was just trying to birdie as many as I could.”

We expect Stricker to be near the top of the leaderboard from the outset and the sportsbook is offering fair golf odds.

Pick: Steve Stricker +450

Alker Seeking Bounce-Back Victory

Alker was our top pick for the U.S Senior Open, and although the Kiwi came up short, it was still another solid effort.

The resurgent Alker has been the best player on the Champions Tour and there’s a reason why he’s the current equal favorite with golf odds.

He currently leads the Charles Schwab Cup after a plethora of victories and he could space the field alongside Stricker, so we’re putting both favorites on our Senior Players Championship betting ticket.

The 50-year-old has had a meteoric rise to stardom after spending much of his career as a journeyman. The Hamilton native is now a 15-time champion worldwide, including four Champions Tour wins.

He won the TimberTech Championship in 2021 to kick things off before adding wins at the Systems Classic, Insperity Championship and Senior PGA Championship.

Having experience as a major winner helps and he can’t be left out of selections.

Pick: Steven Alker +450

Don’t Forget About Langer

There was a time when Bernhard Langer was all the rage on the Champions Tour, so he’s worth backing at the +2000 odds.

The German legend missed the cut at the U.S. Senior Open but we’re prepared to overlook his recent struggles and stick with the 43-time Champions Tour winner.

He has won everything there is to win on the tour, including the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Players Championship. He has been there before and won the biggest tournaments, so he commands attention.

Langer won the Chubb Classic in February, so he’s not horribly out of form, and class takes the 64-year-old close. He ended his 63-for-63 record in making the cuts in Champions Tour majors, but he’s good enough to bounce back.

The +2000 odds with betting online markets are juicy and there is no way we’re not having a little something on the three-time tournament champion.
