The Players Championship: Scheffler Shines as Betting Favorite

The Players Championship is on this week and it’s headed by world number one Scottie Scheffler.

We have golf picks for the unofficial fifth major, which doesn’t feature any LIV players, but it’s still a high-quality field at TPC Sawgrass.

Mallet Works for Scheffler

Scheffler’s decision to switch his putter was bound to happen sooner or later, and its impact was immediately evident last week.

It was Rory McIlroy who suggested to change putters, but everyone in the media was suggesting he should. He was a bad putter, and it has kept him from winning many tournaments.

Winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week is ideal heading into The Players, where he is the +550 favorite at BetUS sportsbook.

That’s about as short as you would want to see in a golf tournament, but he’s the defending Players champion, and with that comes a lot of respect in sports betting markets.

Despite his lack of success later in the year, he loves playing in March and April. This is his time of the year to shine, and we wouldn’t want to leave him out of selections.

Zalatoris on the Verge

Will Zalatoris enters The Players Championship without a big win on his record, but that often results in a win at Sawgrass.

Many players before him have been in similar circumstances, including Rickie Fowler, so he could follow in that mold.

Despite contending with injuries stemming from his aggressively dynamic swing, Zalatoris has showcased solid golf performances since returning to the PGA Tour.

He finished T4 at the Arnold Palmer last week, which followed an excellent T2 at The Genesis, so he’s playing some of the best golf of his career.

The one-time PGA Tour winner is made for The Players, and we’re loving the +2500 online betting odds for him to win.

The American has more upside than most in the field, and he’s trending in the right direction.

D-Day for McIlroy

Never mind helping Scheffer win tournaments, McIlroy needs to focus on his own form.

The Northern Irishman isn’t playing well at all on the PGA Tour this season, finishing T66 at Pebble Beach, and he hasn’t finished better than T21.

He won on the DP World Tour earlier this year, but that came against a terrible field, so we’re not counting that as good form.

Pressure is on McIlroy to show up at Sawgrass, but bettors get +1200 because of his recent struggles. That’s the best golf odds you’ll ever see for McIlroy, so it’s hard not to bite and take the value.

He won The Players in 2019, so he knows the course well, scoring 67 and 65 in his opening two rounds. Getting off to a fast start was crucial for his success, as he held off Champions Tour player Jim Furyk by only one stroke.

If he starts well, look for his odds to firm considerably.

Matsuyama Making Money

Hideki Matsuyama is back to his best after winning The Genesis before playing well enough for a T12 finish last week.

The Japanese star has more PGA Tour-winning experience than most with nine wins, so he should be right around the mark.

He is never too far away from the prize at The Players, and he was leading the tournament in 2020 when it got called off because of Covid-19.

We felt for him on that occasion, but bettors get +3000 with golf betting markets this time around, and he could avenge that cancellation.

He has been making bettors plenty of money this year, so 2024 could belong to the former Masters champion.
