Tiger Woods Marches Into Weekend at The Masters

Woods Overcomes Roller-Coaster Round To Gain Final 36 Holes

Thirty-six holes down, 36 holes to go. Tiger Woods has made the cut at the 2022 Masters.

Of course, there was plenty of drama Friday in a roller-coaster second round for Woods, who shot 74 and is at 145 after two rounds.

Scottie Scheffler shot 67 and is 8-under 136, in the lead by five shots over four foes.

After an opening-round 71, Woods bogeyed four of the first five holes in the second round. And suddenly the cut line was in play for the golfer in his first golf tournament since a near-fatal automobile accident in February 2021.

“I hit a couple of shots that got a couple of bad gusts,” Woods said, “and made a couple of bad swings also. It was like what else could go wrong?

“I made the cut and have a chance over the weekend. If you are within five or six on the back nine Sunday, anything can happen.”

Woods birdied 8 and 10 and appeared to steady himself but bogeys followed in 11 and 12. Patrons and fans tuning in had to wonder if Woods would be working on the weekend.

The Tiger magic — and flair for the dramatic — returned on 13 and 14 as he birdied both holes to claw back to +1 for the tournament.

With the cut line looking like +4, Woods seemed in a solid position to move on to Saturday and Sunday.

He notched a par-5 on the 15th hole, just leaving a 10-foot putt outside the hole. The same result happened on 16 as a putt was tantalizingly close but did not fall.

He left a putt a yard short at 17 but knocked a par putt home with confidence and continued at +1 for the tournament through 35 holes with one to go in the second round.

His second shot on 18 with a 7-iron flew way past the hole on the green, leaving Woods with a testing two-putt to save par.

Woods set himself up with a makeable putt after his first attempt and drilled it in the middle of the hole to finish at +1 and on to the weekend.

Woods is well back of the leader, Scheffler, which leaves him with seemingly slim hope of winning the tournament for the sixth time. It would be a monumental challenge between the physical stress of playing for the first time in more than a year in a tournament and the mental fatigue that comes with Augusta National and The Masters.

Add in the fact he is tied for 19th and would have to play better than a slew of players to contend for the coveted green jacket.

At BetUS Golf Odds, Scheffler is the favorite to win the tournament. Woods is at +8000.

Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas sit at +1000.
