Woods shot a 79 and was at 222, 21 strokes behind leader Mito Pereira after 54 holes.
Woods’ total would have put him in a four-way tie for 76th and last place.
He said after the round, which saw five straight bogeys and a triple bogey, his leg was sore and he would make a decision whether to finish the tournament on Sunday.
The decision came hours later.
The PGA Championship Woods played since an accident mangled his right leg in February 2021.
Woods hinted at the decision after finishing his round.
