Wager Types

Straight Horse Racing Bets

When placing a straight bet the amount to be wagered on a horse is the amount to be risked in the play. There is no way one can lose more than the amount wagered.

Win

A win wager is when you wager on a horse to win the race. For example, if you wager on the 3 horse at Saratoga to win race 4, your horse must come in first place for you to win the wager. Any other outcome will result in a loss unless the race result is a Dead Heat. A Dead Heat means your horse and one or more horses tied for first. For Dead Heat, wagers will be paid out at the track odds.

Place

A place wager is when you wager on your horse to place (finish either first or second) For example, if you wager on the 3 horse at Saratoga to place on race 4, your horse must either win or finish second. The payout on place bets is the same regardless of the horse’s finishing position (first or second). Any other finish will result in a loss unless the result for either first or second place is a Dead Heat.

Show

A show wager is when you wager on your horse to show (finish first, second or third) For example, if you wager on the 3 horse at Saratoga to show on race 4, your horse must come in either win or finish second or finish third. The payout on place bets is the same regardless of the horse’s finishing position (first, second or third). Any other finish will result in a loss unless the result for either first, second, or third place is a Dead Heat. A Dead Heat means your horse and one or more horses tied for a position. For Dead Heat, wagers will be paid out at the track odds.

Exotic Horse Racing Bets

Examples of Exotic wagers when talking about horse racing are Exacta, Quinella Trifecta, Daily Double, Superfecta and Pick 3/4/6. These wagers have much larger payouts than Straight Bets.

Quinella

To win a Quinella, you must pick the first two finishing horses in any order of finish. In other words, you must pick the horse that wins and the horse that finishes second. For example, you bet $5 that horses number 2 and number 7 will come in first and second place in any order. The only way you win this bet is if number 2 and number 7 win and place in either order.

Exacta

To win an Exacta you must pick the first two finishing horses in the exact order of their finish. In other words, you must pick the horse that wins and the horse that finishes second. Exactas can be played using multiple combinations. Wheeling, keying, and boxing horses in exacta’s is a popular bet at the track. For example, if you wager a 1-2 exacta, your horses must come in that order for you to be declared a winner. If it were to come in 2-1, your ticket would be graded as a loss.

Trifecta

To win a Trifecta you must pick the first three finishing horses in the exact order of their finish. In other words, you must pick the horse that wins, the horse that finishes second, and the horse that finishes third. A triple can also be played using multiple combinations. Wheeling, keying, and boxing horses in trifecta’s is a popular bet at the track. For example, if you wager a 1-2-3 triple, your horses must come in that order for you to be declared a winner. If it were to come in 1-3-2, your ticket would be graded as a loss.

Superfecta

To win a Superfecta you must pick the first four finishing horses in the exact order of their finish. In other words, you must pick the horse that wins, the horse that finishes second, third, and fourth. For example, if you wager a 1-2-3-4 superfecta ticket, your horses must come in that exact order. If it were to come in 1-2-4-3, your ticket would be graded as a loss.

Daily Double

The daily double involves picking the winning horse in two consecutive races. All tracks offer the early daily double which involves races #1 and #2. Most tracks also offer a late daily double which is the last two races of the day. Some tracks also offer a rolling daily double which is on any two consecutive races. To win a daily double you must pick the winning horse in each of the two specified races. Multiple combinations can be used when playing the double. Wheeling and keying horses in any leg of the daily is accepted. For example, you can wager on the 1,2,3 horse in the first race along with 2,3 in the second.

Pick 3

To win a Pick 3 bet you are required to select the winning horse in three consecutive races. Many tracks offer the pick 3 and most even offer a rolling pick 3. Let’s assume you wagered a Pick 3 at Saratoga Park on races 2, 3, and 4. If you wagered on the 1 horse in each race, your wager would look like this. Race 2 – Horse 1 to win Race 3 – Horse 1 to win Race 4 – Horse 1 to win In order for you to win a Pick 3 wager, all 3 of your horses must win their individual race. If the Pick 3 result for all 3 races is 1-1-1, you would be a winner. If any leg of the Pick 3 is not a 1 horse, your ticket would be considered a loss. An exception to this rule would be if one of your horses was scratched. In this case, you automatically receive the post-time favorite in place of your scratch. You can use more than one entry in your Pick 3 ticket. For example, you could wager 1-2/2/3-4-5 This would mean in Race 2 from the example above, if the 1 or 2 horse won, you would still be alive in the pick 3. So if you were alive going into the 4th race you would need horses 3, 4, or 5 for you to win your Pick 3 ticket.

Pick 4

To win a Pick 4 bet you are required to select the winning horse in four consecutive races. Most tracks offer the pick 4. Let’s assume you wagered a Pick 4 at Saratoga Park on races 2, 3, 4, and 5. If you wagered on the 1 horse in each race, your wager would look like this. Race 2 – Horse 1 to win
Race 3 – Horse 1 to win
Race 4 – Horse 1 to win
Race 5 – Horse 1 to win
In order for you to win a Pick 4 wager, all 4 of your horses must win their individual race.

Pick 6

To win a Pick 6 bet you are required to select the winning horse in six consecutive races. Most tracks offer the Pick 6. Let’s assume you wagered a Pick 6 at Saratoga Park on races 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. If you wagered on the 1 horse in each race, your wager would look like this. Race 2 – Horse 1 Race 3 – Horse 1 Race 4 – Horse 1 Race 5 – Horse 1 Race 6 – Horse 1 Race 7 – Horse 1 In order for you to win the pick 6, your horses must win each leg of the race.

Box a Bet

To “box” a bet, you use multiple horses taking all likely combinations in that particular bet. If you have decided that two, three, or four horses are the best picks in the race but you are not sure which one will win, run second, third, or fourth the “box” may beyour best bet.

Exacta Box

This bet is the same as an Exacta bet in the fact that you select two horses to come in first and second place. However, an exacta box bet means that there is no specific order to the placement of the horses. For example, you place a $5 exacta box bet on horses number 5 and number 6. This is a total bet of $10 because there are two possible outcomes. You win your bet if number 5 wins first and number 6 wins second or vice versa.

Trifecta Box

This bet is the same as a Trifecta bet in that you are betting on three horses coming in first, second, and third place. However, a Trifecta Box bet means that the three horses you picked can finish the race in any order. They only need to place in the top three positions for you to win. This bet is basically 6 bets in one. For example, you place a $3 trifecta box bet on horses number 4, number 6, and number 7. There are six possible outcomes for these three horses to finish in first to third place; therefore, the total amount of the bet is $18. You win your bet if horse number 4, number 6, and number 7 finish in first, second, and third place of any order.

Specialty Betting
