Arcangelo Makes Jena Antonucci First Female Trainer To Win Triple Crown Race
Captures 155th Edition of Belmont Under Javier Castellano
Arcangelo took the shortest route home to capture the longest leg of the Triple Crown, Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
Under Javier Castellano, Arcangelo, sent off at 7-1 odds, made a move inside the pace-setting National Treasure and drew off to victory in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

The victory was Castellano’s first in 15 Belmont attempts.
Oh, and it made trainer Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

Antonucci praised Arcangelo for having “the heart of a champion.”
That could also describe the conditioner who worked, worked, worked to earn her place in horse racing history.
Antonucci’s triumph came 30 years after Julie Krone became the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race.
Krone won the 1983 Belmont on Colonial Affair.
In this Belmont, National Treasure, the Preakness winner, set all the fractions.
Castellano sat chilly and kept Arcangelo on the rail. He moved inside National Treasure and drew off under an extended drive.
Arcangelo returned $17.80 to win for a $2 bet. Forte finished second and Tapit Trice was third.
He had been added to the race via a $50,000 supplemental fee.

And, sadly, a day that seemed triumphant for horse racing ends with another black eye for the sport.
Spirit of St. Louie (4/5) pulled away in stretch to win BEL Saturday finale. Unfortunately, Excursionniste was pulled up midway on far turn by Flavien Prat and the horse’s injuries were not salvageable and he was euthanized on the course. Prat is fine.
