Breeders’ Cup Classic Could Offer Tremendous Betting Opportunities
The 40th Breeders’ Cup takes place on Nov. 3 and 4 at Santa Anita Park, which plays host to the event for a record 11th time. Five races for 2-year-olds will be run on Nov. 3 with the final nine championship races set for Nov. 4. Horse Racing betting odds are always juicy at the Breeders’ Cup with full fields featuring the best equine athletes in the world.
Three-Year-Olds, Led by Arcangelo, Take Center Stage
How to bet on the Breeders’ Cup? Ideas and opinions will be formulated in the days leading up to the race, but there are many familiar faces who will enter the starting gate. Arcangelo has an apparent lock on the Eclipse Award for 3-year-olds and would also take down Horse of the Year honors with a victory in the Classic. The colt, whose father won the BC Classic at Santa Anita in 2016, scored impressive victories in the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes.
Fourteen starters, including Kentucky Derby winner Mage, are expected to cram into the starting gate for the Classic at 1¼ miles. Top older horses include Zandon and Slow Down Andy. All eyes, though, will be on Arcangelo, who worked 5 furlongs in 1 minute on Oct. 15.
“It was a serious work. A pretty work,” Jenna Antonucci, the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race, told the Paulick Report. “I wanted sub-12 seconds for the final furlong, which he gave me. I think I’m pretty spot-on with that. That’s what he’ll need to do on race day.”
With a crowded field, anything can happen, whether it be a speed duel or traffic problems. Therefore, it will be hard to take a short price on Arcangelo, but with a 14-horse field, you could get 3-1. Arabian Knight, trainer Bob Baffert’s star 3-year-old, and the Richard Mandella- conditioned Geaux Rocket Ride should also attract plenty of attention when betting online.
It’s Not Easy to Make a Score at Breeders’ Cup, But We Did
Breeders’ Cup predictions are easy to make, but it’s difficult to be right with horses coming from all over the country and the world. We caught lightning in a bottle by delivering the Pick 5 on the Friday card in 2022 that paid a handsome $2,408.02 for an $18 investment at the racebook.
Santa Anita was the setting for the biggest longshot winner in Breeders’ Cup history. Arcangues won the 1993 Classic at odds of 133-1. Will there be another Arcangues this year?
One longshot prevailed in 2022 as Caravel won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at 42-1. In the nine Saturday BC races, six second-place finishers were longshots at 12-1, 21-1, 24-1, 26-1, 31-1 and 55-1. This could be a way to make money if there is a strong favorite.

- NBC’s coverage concludes with the Classic, but it won’t be the last Breeders’ Cup race of the day. The network is scheduled to broadcast a college football game at 7 p.m. ET. That means the final two BC races — the Turf Sprint and the Sprint — will air on FanDuel TV, pushing the Classic out of the anchor spot for the first time.
- The Turf Sprint will be run at 5 furlongs, meaning the picturesque downhill course will not be utilized. However, the Turf, at 1½ miles, starts on the hill and crosses the main track.
- A pair of Japanese runners are expected to compete in the Classic. Ushba Tesoro has won six straight races. Derma Sotogake finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby.
Who is the most likely horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic?
Arcangelo, the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner, is expected to be the favorite as the most accomplished horse in the field.
What are the top three Breeders’ Cup races to bet on?
The Classic is almost always the featured attraction, but the other two could come from any of the other 13 races. Those with vulnerable favorites offer the best opportunity to make money.
