Pick 5 Picks For Kentucky Oaks Offers Many Roads to Cash

It’s Kentucky Oaks Day at Churchill Downs on Friday when fillies and mares take center stage. The Pick 5 ending with the Oaks begins with the boys in the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes, but the ladies take the floor for the next four races – all stakes, culminating with the day’s biggest event. All five races consist of deep fields with plenty of talented horses to consider.

BetUS horse racing writer Donald Norton nailed the Pick 5 on 2022 Breeders’ Cup Friday, turning an $18 bet into more than $2,000, but has gone cold since. Now is a good time to return to the winner’s circle, so come along for the ride with this $16 ticket. Pick 5 Picks for Kentucky Oaks

RACE 7: Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes

1 1/16 miles. Post time: 2:09 p.m. ET

First Mission (3), the 8-5 morning-line favorite, comes off a five-length victory in Grade 3 at Oaklawn with a 100 Beyer. He ran a career-high 102 in finishing second by a nose in a Grade 2 at Churchill Downs in November. Money Supply (1) is quickly getting good and is 3-for-8 on an off track. He paired up a career-high 96 Beyers in his last two races, winning a Grade 3 and finishing third in a Grade 2 in his first two graded stakes tries. Top-tier jockey Tyler Gaffalione should be able to position Money Supply right behind the speed that includes First Mission.

RACE 8: Grade 3 Modesty Stakes

1⅛ miles (turf). Post time: 3:03 p.m. ET

With rain in the forecast, Sparkle Blue (10) and Mouffy (5) are the choices in leg two. Sparkle Blue, making his third start of the year, is 2-for-2 on less than firm turf. Mouffy ran on good turf in his last races, finishing second in both with solid Beyers. Sparkle Blue should be forwardly placed while Mouffy is expected to launch from midpack for Frankie Dettori.

Race 9: Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes

7 furlongs. Post time: 4:04 p.m. ET

It looks like trainer Brad Cox has this market cornered with Impel (1) and Denim and Pearls (7), who are must-plays as the clear-cut favorites. Impel was the 5-2 morning-line choice, but Denim and Pearls (3-1) could wind up the favorite after winning a Grade 2 at Keeneland by 9¼ lengths. Impel has more early speed, though, and can get the jump on her stablemate.

Race 10: Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes

1 1/16 miles (turf). Post time: 4:51 p.m. ET

Buchu (4) beat four of his 13 rivals in a Grade 2 at Keeneland over a good turf course and is the top choice. Buchu should improve off that effort as she makes her second start of the year for 25% trainer Phillip Bauer and solid jockey Matt Garcia. Hard to Justify (9), the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf champion, makes her 3-year-old debut. Trainer Chad Brown is 26% with 180-plus day layoff types and has the services of jockey Flaven Prat.

Race 11: Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks

1⅛ miles. Post time: 5:51 p.m. ET

The five lowest-priced horses in the Kentucky Oaks stand out, with three – Thorpedo Anna, Ways and Means and Just F Y I – making their second starts of 2024. It’s a lot to ask a 3-year-old filly short on experience to win a Grade 1 race before a crowd of more than 100,000, so the other two get the nod to complete the Pick 5 at the BetUS racebook.

Tarifa (8) and Leslie’s Rose (14) each make their fourth starts of 2024. Prat, among the best jockeys, should work out a good trip from his middle post. Brad Cox trains. Leslie’s Rose drew outside, but arguably the best jockey in the world – Irad Ortiz Jr. – should be able to map something out. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher conditions the daughter of Into Mischief.

THE BET: 1,3 with 5,10 with 1,7 with 4,9 with 8,14
