Golden Pal seeks to become the third horse – and first male –- to win three Breeders’ Cup races. The 4-year-old colt is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the horse racing odds to defend his title in the Turf Sprint on Saturday.
Golden Pal, the 2020 Juvenile Sprint winner, makes his final start before entering stud duty next year. Highfield Princess arrives from Europe with a three-race win streak – all Grade Is, offering the biggest threat to deny Golden Pal’s place in history.

Tough European Cookies Expected To Challenge
Golden Pal tries to join Goldikova, who won three straight Miles (2008-10) and Beholder (2012 Juvenile Fillies, 2013 and 2016 Distaffs) in the history books, but faces stiff competition.
“You have the fastest turf horses from all over the world coming here. But you know, we’re ready for ’em,” trainer Wesley Ward told Bloodhorse. “I’ve got the fastest horse, so now it is a question of racing luck.”
Golden Pal is 8-for-12 lifetime, 4-for-4 at Keeneland after winning the Woodford last month. He is 3-for-4 in 2022 with the only loss coming after a slow start at Royal Ascot.
Highfield Princess, a 5-year-old mare, is 12-for-30 lifetime. He comes off victories in France, Great Britain and Ireland, and should be prominent from the start.
Creative Force also arrives from Europe after finishing behind Naval Crown and Emaraaty Ana in recent races. Creative Force is 6-for-14 lifetime, but 0-for-4 in 2022.
“He’s rock solid and tough and will need a lot of luck, but he will be coming at them at the finish,” trainer Charles Appleby said of Creative Force, who starts from the rail.
How the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Could Unfold
Golden Pal is the fastest horse in the race, but can expect immediate company from Highfield Princess among others. Golden Pal is more than capable of carrying his speed all the way to the wire, but faces his stiffest test. Creative Force should avoid the wide trip that other closers will endure. William Buick, Creative Force’s jockey, won three Breeders’ Cup races last year.

The Play
Golden Pal loves Keeneland, but tremendous pressure could take the champion down. Creative Force’s connections and post 1 provide a recipe for an upset — provided Buick finds a seam. Creative Force is worthy of a wager when betting online at the racebook. Highfield Princess should also be there at the end, but like Golden Pal could succumb to a fast pace.
