Favorites with serious questions
There’s no shortage of question marks in a race with an overflow field of 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles, as well as some of the top trainers in the sport. The distance? The track? The pace?
Chocolate Gelato is the tepid 7-2 early favorite and unlikely to get below 3-1. The daughter of Practical Joke is one of two trained by Todd Pletcher, who’s winless with 14 starters in this race. “Gelato” did make the lead at the half-mile pole, winning the Grade 1 Frizette (Aqueduct) against a few others in here. A regressed speed figure after her maiden sprint win is concerning.
Chop Chop, second choice at 4-1, is trained by Brad Cox, who has a win in this race. The City of Light miss was second on this course/this distance in her last out, Grade 1 Alcibiades when missing by a nose. Closers don’t do well at the distance, so she’ll have to lay closer to the pace.
Atomically gets a trainer change (to Pletcher) and jockey switch (Luis Saez), possessing the preferred running style. Racing exclusively in Florida-bred races (Gulfstream), on the improve.
How this Race Unfolds
In the Juvenile Fillies races at Keeneland (2015 and 2020), front-runners and pressers filled three of the top four positions. Look for more of the same in this spot.
You’re My Girl gets a coveted inner draw, and a seasoned rider (John Velazquez) who has won this race before. She’ll have to improve off a second to “Gelato” last out, but appears capable
The turn of foot exhibited by Atomically, albeit against lesser competition, is tough to ignore. She may be sent to the front or press the leaders. And Tell Me Nolies finds a cozy spot inside behind the pacesetters and thus gets a piece here. Chocolate Gelato and Chop Chop will likely need to take back to secure their positions, which may compromise their chances.
