Nashwa Could Be Special

We think 3-year-old European filly Nashwa could be much better than average and we would be surprised if she didn’t figure in the finish.

The well-bred daughter of Frankel won the Grade I Prix de Diane at Chantilly before adding the Grade I Nassau Stakes to her record. The Nassau Stakes is one of the better turf form guides and we’re not surprised by the sportsbook odds for the 5-2 favorite.

She comes off a second placing in the Prix de L’Opera when beating Above the Curve, so that’s another good form guide.

“She hasn’t been over-raced this season and we always planned to go to Longchamp and then here at the end of the year,” trainer John Gosden told BloodHorse. “At Breeders’ Cup—European trainers learn the hard way—you can’t come as an afterthought. That rarely works.

“You really have to plan it from a long way out. A lot of people do that now, where they used to not do that in the old days.”

Nashwa could be the dominant filly of the year and she maps better than second favorite In Italian, who won the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland last start. Take nothing away from the Brown-trained filly, she’s a nice American type, but the European turf horses are clearly superior.

In her favor is her European breeding, so while she’s raced locally, she is a daughter of Dubawi and that’s good to see. She is good enough to push Nashwa close in what should be a tough battle to the line.

Tuesday is also good enough to win on Saturday. She defeated Nashwa in the Epsom Oaks and has yet to win in four subsequent starts. However, she got the better of champion Emily Upjohn in the Oaks, so the form has stacked up well.

If the O’Brien-trained daughter of Galileo can find her best, she’s a threat at generous horse racing odds.

How the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Could Unfold

Nashwa should get every hope in the run from barrier three. She has the ability to settle on the speed and still have something in the tank over the concluding stages. We expect her to be winding up approaching the home turn. Tuesday is likely to settle behind the favorite and warm up late. She could flash home for either the win or a minor placing.
