One of the more exciting races at the Breeders’ Cup is the Sprint, which is a fast-paced contest at Del Mar.
At the top of horse racing betting markets is the ultra-impressive Jackie’s Warrior, who has made mincemeat of his opposition recently.
However, in a race containing Following Sea, C Z Rocket and Dr. Schivel, anything could happen at the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday.

Favorite in Peak Condition
The entire campaign for +120 favorite Jackie’s Warrior has been about the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and he heads to Del Mar in tip-top shape.
The son of Maclean’s Music owns eight wins from 11 starts, including triumphs in the Allen Jerkens Memorial and his last start in the Gallant Bob Stakes.
His only attempt in the Breeders’ Cup came in the Juvenile last season. He finished fourth behind Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, and Keepmeinmind, but they’re middle distance horses, so the defeat was to be expected.
Jackie’s Warrior is a superb sprinter and that was evident when winning the Gallant Bob. He ran a slick 1:08.64 for six furlongs, which would be competitive anywhere around the world.
Co-owner Kirk Robison said he’s in fine fettle approaching his grand final.
“Jackie’s Warrior hasn’t missed a beat, according to Steve,” Robison told Bloodhorse. “He’s coming up to the race really well, and we’re just hoping he stays happy and healthy until race time.”
The $95,000 purchase was a wise investment for Robison, who gets his best chance to win a Breeders’ Cup title.
“Anywhere there’s a Breeders’ Cup is fun. I haven’t had many chances to run in a Breeders’ Cup with a horse that really had a chance to win, so we’re extremely excited about this horse,” he added.
The $2 million race is an open contest, but the sportsbook has Jackie’s Warrior at +120. He’s getting short, but he is the class act of the field.
Form Guide with Santa Anita Sprint
Firm in betting markets is Dr. Schivel, who won the Santa Anita Sprint Championship last month.
The 3-year-old colt held off a challenge from Flagstaff and C Z Rocket, with the latter also running in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
We like the Santa Anita Sprint as a form guide for this race, so we’re not surprised to see Dr. Schivel on the second line of betting at +400.
The son of Violence started his career with consecutive placings, but it wasn’t long before he scored his maiden win at Del Mar. He has since added two more wins at Del Mar, so the track won’t pose any problems.

He is currently riding a five-start winning streak, and he is the biggest threat to Jackie’s Warrior. They have yet to meet, but based on his form around C Z Rocket and Spielberg, he can’t be overlooked in betting online markets.
C Z Rocket is an experienced 7-year-old, who finished second behind Whitmore in this race last year. He has since added two wins and four placings to his record, so he still has pace in his legs.
The Peter Miller-trained runner might have finished behind Dr. Schivel in two starts this preparation, but he could be saving his best for Del Mar.
Bettors get +1200 odds for C Z Rocket, who could attract plenty of sentimental money on race day.
Following Sea is Worth Following
After trying his hand at longer races, it’s clear that Following Sea is a better sprinter.
The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Runhappy finished second in the Haskell Stakes behind Mandaloun, which was a great effort, but he’s a better horse at the shorter distances.
His placing behind Jackie’s Warrior in the Jerkens Memorial was a game effort over seven furlongs, and dropping to six furlongs is right up his alley.
He won the Grade I Vosburgh over six furlongs last start, so we’re keen on his chances on an each-way basis. Following Sea is paying +600 at the sportsbook, which is a generous price given his ability.
Beating Jackie’s Warrior won’t be easy, but we wouldn’t be leaving him off our tickets. Bettors could get an excellent place price on race day.
Breeders’ Cup Sprint Picks
It’s easy to pick the favorite, but we can’t look past Jackie’s Warrior. Sprint races can come down to luck, but he looks bulletproof for the most part.
His recent wins have been superb and he’s still paying better than even money, so put him on top.
Dr. Schivel and Following Sea should be fighting out the minors, and C Z Rocket should be right there to boost payouts.
1st – Jackie’s Warrior +120
2nd – Dr. Schivel +400
3rd – Following Sea +600
