Kentucky Derby betting is available for this week’s big race at Churchill Downs, where Journalism is all the rage with our sportsbook.

He is the highest-rated runner in the field, but the Run for the Roses can result in an upset, so I have four of my best horse racing picks for the Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Picks

Journalism (+270)

It’s hard to look past Journalism, who finished third on debut before posting four consecutive wins. The colt won the Santa Anita Derby last start, which is always a good Kentucky Derby form guide.

He is the highest-rated horse in the field, and there have been talks of Journalism becoming the next Triple Crown champion. The hype is real, and there is always one Derby runner with the hype train chugging.

It’s warranted, and his Kentucky Derby odds are worth taking. The +270 is unlikely to last on race day, and he could shorten to around +180 on Saturday. He’s the testing material, and my top pick to win.

Sovereignty (+600)

My horse betting picks include Sovereignty, and I’ve liked his chances for the last few months. He showed good early form before breaking through in the Street Sense at Churchill Downs.

A key on how to bet on the Kentucky Derby is backing horses with track experience, and the 3-year-old colt by Into Mischief ticks the boxes. He followed up the win with a victory in the Fountain of Youth before placing in the Florida Derby.

The winner of that race isn’t in the Kentucky Derby, but it’s a solid form guide, which is why his Kentucky Derby odds have shortened to +600. It’s a fair price for the biggest threat to Journalism.

Luxor Cafe (+1100)

Japanese runners are starting to have success in the Triple Crown races, and they are bred tough in Japan.

The son of American Pharoah is bred to be a Kentucky Derby winner, and although he has no experience racing in North America, his two wins in Japan have been excellent, and he gets a world-class rider in Joao Moreira.

Moreira rides around the world, where sitting wide with no cover isn’t accepted. Luxor Cafe will get every chance to win, and he’s good enough to get the job done. My horse betting picks can’t exclude him, especially at the +1100 odds.

Burnham Square (+1500)

There is confidence with Burnham Square, who enters the 2025 Kentucky Derby with a Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes win under his belt.

He finished fourth behind Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth, but turned that form around with an impressive win over East Avenue and River Thames, with East Avenue also expected to run well on Saturday.

It’s an open field outside the favorite, and I’m not leaving out Burnham Square. He showed his toughness last start at Keeneland, and that form should hold up well enough at Churchill Downs.

He should get a good run from the barrier, which adds to his appeal.
