Society Is Wild Card in Distaff

Nest comes into this race off three straight wins, the only horse in the field that can make that claim, and a win here would wrap up the Eclipse Award for older dirt female horses.

Malathaat, she of back-to-back wins, including the Grade 1 Spinster last month at this track, has been battling with Clairiere since the summer and each has posted a pair of wins. Clairiere struggled in her last start at Saratoga and trainer Steve Asmussen gave her some time off after she hit her head in the starting gate and was injured.

Clairiere has won the last two times she has come off a layoff.

Search Results has also run in a few of the same races as Malathaat and Clariere and has finished in the top three in her last 10 races, including five wins and two seconds.

Society is an improving sort and was soundly defeated by the favorite Nest during the summer while old war horse Secret Oath is back for another go around having failed to win since May.

Secret Oath triumphed over Next in the Kentucky Oaks but has been no match for her in two subsequent horse racing races. Longshots Blue Stripe and Awake At Midnyte round out the field.

How The Breeders’ Cup Distaff Could Unfold

There are a bunch of horses in here that want to stalk the lead, including all three favorites, but only one horse – Society – has shown an affinity for running on the lead. Society has shown great improvement in her last two races and being on the lead is an advantage at Keeneland.

Society breaks to the lead from the outside under Florent Geroux while Next and Search Results settle in behind. Not far behind them will be Malathaat, Clairiere and Secret Oath.

Society is unlikely to take them all the way, but stranger things have happened. If she is unable, it becomes all about who can get the best position to be able to pounce as they turn for home.
