Rattle N Roll Set to Shake Fountain of Youth Stakes

Gulfstream Park Welcomes Rising Stars

A big field lines up in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, including some runners good enough to run in the Kentucky Derby.

It’s an important Road to the Kentucky Derby race and horse racing odds suggest that it will be a close affair.

Rattle N Roll is looking to prove his win in the Breeders’ Cup was no fluke, but he’ll have strong challenges from Giant Game, Galt and Simplification to name a few.

McPeek Happy With Grade I Winner

Rattle N Roll went from a maiden winner at Churchill Downs to a Grade I Breeders’ Cup Futurity winner in two starts, which is quite the achievement.

The Ken McPeek-trained colt didn’t make much of an impression early on after running third on debut and then eighth at Saratoga, but his form has improved out of nowhere.

His win in the Futurity was all class and it shapes up well for the Fountain of Youth Stakes, especially after clocking the second-fastest workout over the distance on Saturday morning.

“It went really well. The horse worked super,” McPeek told Blood Horse. “He worked fantastic and came out of it good. We’re going to do a little gate work Wednesday, and he’s all set.”

McPeek would love to secure some Kentucky Derby points early.

Rattle N Roll is the type of Thoroughbred who could go under the radar with the sportsbook, so bettors could get value odds on race day.

Pick: Rattle N Roll

Holy Bull Form Stands Out

The Grade III Holy Bull Stakes featured the likes of Simplification, Giant Game and Galt, so it should be a good form guide.

Finishing best behind White Abarrio was Simplification, who has yet to run a bad race from five career starts.

The son of Not This Time owns two wins and two placings, including a win in the Macho Macho Man at Gulfstream Park on New Year’s Day.

All of his starts have come on the track, so he has the experience edge at Gulfstream Park and that should shine through betting online markets. We expect him to be well-favored to get the chocolates and he’s a big danger to Rattle N Roll.

Finishing behind Simplification in fourth was Galt, who has interesting form lines that could measure up at this level.

The son of Medaglia d’Oro showed little at his first two starts when running sixth, but since racing at Gulfstream Park, he has won at maiden level and run well in the Holy Bull.

It’s a nice form reversal, and although he’s not a top pick for the Fountain of Youth, he could figure in the placings.

The big disappointment in the Holy Bull was Giant Game finishing eighth. Expectations were high after running third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile behind Corniche and Pappacap, who are well-favored to win the Kentucky Derby.

He couldn’t follow up that run with much, but we expect Giant Game to be in the thick of the finish. We believe he’s the best runner to come out of the Holy Bull.

Pick: Giant Game

A. P.’s Secret Could Quiet Field

Going under the radar is A. P’s Secret, who hasn’t done much wrong in three career starts.

The son of Cupid won on debut at Gulfstream Park before finishing second at allowance level behind Strike Hard.

He returned in 2022 with a win over a mile, and although yet to face a field of this quality, trainer Saffie Joseph believes he’s up for the task.

“A. P.’s Secret is a quality colt that we believe is at (White Abarrio’s) level also, but he’s going to have to jump forward to prove it,” Joseph said. “We’re going to go to the Fountain of Youth with him and give him a chance to prove it.”

Form behind Strike Hard has been franked by his performance for second in the Mucho Mucho Man behind Simplification and his fourth in the Sam F. Davis Stakes behind Classic Causeway.

That bodes well for A. P’s Secret, who is worth having on your ticket.

Pick: A. P’s Secret
