The $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes is the feature race at Santa Anita on Saturday and it has attracted a small but slick field.
Under the Stars has been best-backed with horse racing betting odds. The Bob Baffert-trained filly looks to have a bright future.
However, age-group racing throws in some upset results and there are some classy fillies looking to score an upset.
Baffert Filly Breaks Through
Under the Stars started her career with a third placing at Santa Anita before rising in class for the Desi Arnaz Stakes.
She was no match for runaway winner Eda on that occasion, but she scored a breakthrough win at Los Alamitos last time out.
The 3-year-old filly by Pioneerofthenile is looking to earn enough points for the Kentucky Oaks. She is owned by Coolmore, so expectations are high.
She has been heavily backed with the sportsbook because of the time she ran. Under the Stars ran six furlongs in 1:09.16, which is a slick time for a filly having just her third career start.
Her turn-of-foot was impressive after sitting midfield, so expect a similar ride.
Big Switch is Unbeaten
John Sadler lines up the 3-year-old filly who has yet to suffer a defeat from two starts.
The daughter of Mr Big kicked off her career with an impressive maiden victory at Del Mar before doubling down and taking out the Golden State Juvenile Fillies.
She battled gamely in the straight before pulling away late. The first two home put a solid margin on the rest of the field, so the win rates highly.
With John Velazquez in the saddle from barrier three, she’s going to get every chance in the run.
Velazquez has been riding extremely well at Santa Anita. He has saddled up a horse over 35,000 times and former money leader Jerry Bailey believes he’s one of the best going around.
“It’s so hard to define who the best jockey is,” Bailey told The Orange County Register. “It’s whoever is riding with the most confidence at the time. But he’s one of the best position riders ever. He makes very few mistakes, and he always puts the horse where he can win if he has the chance.”
Velazquez and Big Switch could remain unbeaten and push Under the Stars close. Look for a push with betting online markets.
Don’t Sleep on Awake at Midnyte
Doug O’Neill lines up the daughter of Nyquist, who won on debut at Santa Anita before finishing second in the Jimmy Durante.
She is a speedy type who wasn’t far behind Tezzaray at Del Mar and we expect that form to stack up well enough for the Santa Ynez.
Having experience in stakes company should be enough to see her right in the mix. Bettors should get each-way odds on race day and a betting push would be a good sign.
She got the better of Under the Stars in her debut win, so that is another excellent form guide. Under the Stars has since won, so the form is franked and O’Neill is no stranger to winning these races.
