Appleby Goes for Second Straight Turf Win

Trainer Charles Appleby, who won this race last year with Yibir, sends out two horses, including the favorite Rebel’s Romance. The 4-year-old Irish bred was switched to turf after eight races and all he has done is go 4-for-4 on the surface over 1½ miles, including winning two Grade 1s. Those two Grade 1 wins may be discredited a bit as they occurred in Germany.

War Like Goddess, who is trained by Bill Mott, twice a winner in this race (1992, 1987), is easily the most accomplished American horse in the field with 9 wins from 12 starts. The 5-year-old Kentucky bred is 5-for-5 at the distance and 2-for-2 at Keeneland. There are some who may discount this horse because the majority of his wins have come at Grade 2 and 3 levels.

William Buick, who rode Yibir to the win last year, gets the mount on Nations Pride, another horse bred by Godolpin in Ireland. One of two 3-year-olds in the race, Nations Pride has run his last three races in America, winning the last two in graded stakes company.

Broome is an interesting entrant from the great Aiden O’Brien, who has won this race a record six times. The 6-year-old was well beaten in the top races in France and Ireland this fall but was second in this race last year at Del Mar. The deep closer earned a pair of speed figures in America that tower over the rest of the field and he gets America’s top rider in Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Mishrif is another horse trained by a former winner of this race John Gosden. The 5-year-old has run in 10 straight Grade 1s but has only won one of them. Gosden may have signaled his intentions when he named Lanfranco Dettori, who has won this race a record five times, to ride.

How The Breeders’ Cup Turf Could Unfold

Expect this field to be tightly bunched for the first mile or so with Channel Maker or Bye Bye Melvin the likely pacesetter. Highland Chief, Nations Pride and Rebel’s Romance won’t be far behind, followed by mid-pack types and closers, including War Like Goddess.

As they turn for home, frontrunners will fade, closers will be in mid-rally and War Like Goddess and Rebel’s Romance will be positioning themselves for the stretch duel.
