A Movie Star in the Making?

I probably have a few enemies out there that I don’t know. – Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor and entertainment news are nothing new, and it’s become expected over the last decade or so as the fighting pride of Ireland has mastered the art of stealing headlines, whether it’s via his octagon antics or by the persona he delivers to the world outside of the cage.

However, who would’ve thought we’d be putting McGregor and UFC rumors aside and swapping them out for McGregor and Hollywood gossip in 2024?

I certainly didn’t, but here we are, eight days out from “The Notorious” making his on-screen debut of Patrick Swayze’s renowned Road House reboot, and the Big Mac is already claiming his list of enemies in Hollywood is building up.

No, he isn’t throwing dollies at Hollywood executive bosses or telling DJ Caruso that a film with him will be a “Red Panties Night” for his wife. Still, during McGregor’s rise to stardom, the man himself has revealed how movie offers were constant, and by committing to some of them but failing to pull through, he’s likely made a few unknown enemies along the way.

While the words “unknown enemies” is important here, I think it’s safe to say that Vin Diesel, the star of XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and movies director, DJ Caruso, are likely a pairing that McGregor is referring to after he dropped out of the XXX role following a loss to Nate Diaz.

Caruso expressed his anger when McGregor dropped out, and Vin Diesel clearly had his panties in a twist after this comment: “McGregor had a role written for him, but had to go get his manhood back.”

I understand Diesel’s frustrations; the guy fell off after the 80th Fast and Furious, let’s be honest here. You can visualize McGregor’s response to that comment; “Who the fook is that guy.”

“I had turned down a good few roles in my time on the climb,” McGregor said during an interview with TotalFilm. “I’ve had directors show up at fight camp, really beautiful directors doing top-end movies… and over and over, they’d come to me, and I always turned them down.

“I’d leave people a little high and dry. I probably have a few enemies out there that I don’t know of because I had said, ‘I might do it.’”

Are we surprised? This news stems from the man who preached: “We’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over,” during his heyday in professional MMA. This clearly isn’t a slogan; it’s a way of life for McGregor, who wasn’t willing to accept any old film role, to take part.

With that said, and alongside the star power of Jake Gyllenhaal, will Road House take over the box office and deliver staggering numbers like McGregor has achieved as a prize-fighter?

The world’s favorite Irish mixed martial artist has broken numerous pay-per-view records within the fighting world. Should we anticipate, those same fans booking movie tickets on March 8 to see McGregor play the role of Knox – a hired hitman sent to kill Gyllenhaal’s character?

I’d say yes, and if so, the film will generate eye-watering profits. However, don’t expect to see the Irish superstar in a trilogy of films or accept any more positions within Hollywood anytime soon. Conor McGregor’s next fight has been confirmed for 2024. While the opponent remains a mystery, fans undoubtedly want to see the former two-division champion compete in the octagon instead of watching him on cinema screens.
