I’m not sure where a presidential run from Smith is coming from…

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith is known for his bravado at screaming out hot takes about sports. Basically, you can blame him and Skip Bayless for the damage done to mainstream sports media with a show like First Take that is low on substance and high in volume.

Now imagine the daily political news if Stephen A. ran for President of the United States to take over when President Trump sees his second term end. It’s a crazy thought, right?

“My fellow Americans, I must sincerely apologize. I was scheduled for an important call with President Putin, but did you see the 45-point triple-double Luka Doncic was working on in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals last night? Putin can wait. I had to call an emergency meeting with my cabinet to go through the budget and see where we passed the bill to give LeBron this much help. My goodness.”

But this apparently is not that crazy to some as Front Office Sports tweeted that Smith is polling at 2% for the Democratic nomination in the 2028 election, just behind Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (3%), who just ran for vice president.

There’s even a @SASForPres account on X/Twitter that’s shared a clip of Smith on The View where he said he’d love to debate these politicians with the presidency on the line:

With the presidency on the line? See, he’s approaching this like it’s just sports, and we have already done enough damage by treating politics like sports.

The George Jefferson of Sports Media

My take on Stephen A. Smith has always been that he’s playing a character and doesn’t even believe all the things he says about sports. It’s entertainment to him. He’s like the George Jefferson of sports media. For those of a certain age, George Jefferson was the lead character, played by actor Sherman Hemsley, on the hit sitcom The Jeffersons (1975-85) after the character first debuted in All in the Family.

Yes, those shows are worth watching today. But I never got into watching Smith on First Take because I can’t stand Skip Bayless, and it’s tiring to listen to these two shout at each other. But Smith has always been more about his line delivery and emotion rather than the substance of his sports takes, or when he reviewed The Dark Knight:

I’m not sure where a presidential run from Smith is coming from, but I know he has made appearances on Fox News and CNN to talk politics more in recent years. It also might be stemming from his very recent appearance on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher which made the entertainment news for the way Smith explained why Democrats lost to Trump again in November:

I watched that episode live, and while I was expecting the worst from Smith, I have to admit he held his own and offered plenty of nuanced, well-reasoned takes that can reach people who are tired of the two-party system and want something different.

Did the thought cross my mind that this guy should be running for office? No, but I don’t think we need to worry about that. He’d have to take a huge cut in pay and time watching sports, and that ain’t happening.
