The Name’s Powers. Chad Powers.

When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story… – Glen Powell

If you weren’t familiar with the Chad Powers player before, you’re about to become much more familiar. The character was a creation of former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Essentially, he put on prosthetics and tried to be a walk-on quarterback at Penn State Football.

The character has gained a cult following and it looks like Hulu is trying to capitalize. Based on the latest entertainment news, the character of Chad Powers is getting a scripted series starring Glen Powell. The show is going to follow a star quarterback whose career is jeopardized by his poor behavior. He goes undercover as Chad Powers to try and resurrect his career.

One of the biggest things that sticks out to me is that Glen Powell is a co-writer and co-creator of the show. Those who are familiar with Glen Powell movies know that he’s famous for being an actor with chiseled abs more than a writer. However, he’s been getting into the writing game recently as he co-wrote the screenplay for a movie called Hit-Man and is also co-writing a Captain Planet movie.

I’m always dubious when actors try to get into writing but perhaps Powell is the next Taylor Sheridan. I’m gonna be honest, when I first saw the headline that there’s a Chad Powers TV show getting made, I thought it was going to be a contender for the worst thing ever made.

Part of what makes Chad Powers work is that it’s an unscripted bit and since Eli Manning is a professional quarterback, it’s fun watching him pretend to be some random weirdo who stumbled onto the practice field. It’s got a Jackass/Bad Grandpa feel to it which is almost always funny.

I don’t know how well it’s going to translate into a scripted situation but the general idea isn’t terrible.

“We’re both diehard college football fans,” Powell and co-creator Michael Waldron said in a press release. “When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be part of this team, and can’t wait to get Chad in the game. Think fast, run fast.”

While I initially thought it was going to be crap, it’s a premise that could work. It obviously has to be different than the Eli Manning short but there’s enough there to make it work in a scripted setting. I’m all for more fun shows involving sports so here’s hoping it’s not a pile of trash.
