How Much Do Human Lives Cost These Days?
While “Squid Game” isn’t based on a true story, it’s interesting how art can imitate life…
It’s now been over two years since Netflix’s “Squid Game” premiered and took the world by storm. The Korean survival drama was able to cross cultural boundaries to become one of the biggest shows ever.
As we all eagerly await the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix is releasing a real-life version of the show called “Squid Game: The Challenge,” according to entertainment news. Unlike the show, contestants’ lives won’t be at risk, but they will be competing in a series of challenges, and the winner will take home $4.56 million.

The irony of this show existing is not lost on me, and it’s actually kind of amazing that Netflix thought it would be a great idea to make a real-life show based on a show that is about how capitalism exploits poor people. But hey, this is the world we live in, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to be tuning in.
Based on the newly-released trailer, it looks like “Squid Game: The Challenge” will follow the premise of the original show closely. Just without, you know, the murder aspect. At least, hopefully.
The teaser shows the return of some iconic games from the original series, like Red Light, Green Light, and The Glass Tile Game. Honestly, it’s wild that Netflix is actually going through with this, as “Squid Game” was so damn intense. $4.56 million is so much money, so it’s easy to see contestants getting crazy during the course of the show.
It doesn’t help that “Squid Game: The Challenge” is already marred with controversy. It was reported back in February that the contestants had to deal with “inhumane” conditions during filming, and they were also not paid anything. People would go so far as fighting off hypothermia just for a chance to win.
Netflix denies that ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ reality show is dangerous following reports that at least one contestant had to be stretchered off set:

Yikes, it’s bad when a show with a controversial premise is also dealing with controversy behind the scenes. That said, all of these people willingly signed up to participate, and unlike the original series, they don’t get shot for losing. While “Squid Game” isn’t based on a true story, it’s interesting how art can imitate life. This show might be unethical, but it doesn’t appear that Netflix is doing anything illegal. That said, they are definitely taking advantage of less fortunate people.

Though “Squid Game: The Challenge” seems to be in poor taste, it’s going to be hard not to watch. The original series was so damn compelling, and now we get to watch a watered-down version with real people. Sign me up. This may also be the only season we get of this, as it’s hard to imagine Netflix wants to deal with more controversy behind the scenes.
