Flop Now, Icon Later? 🎬
I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’. – Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie recently opened up about the whole Babylon situation—you know, how it kind of tanked at the box office—and let’s just say, she’s still confused.
On the Talking Pictures podcast, she said she “loves” the film and doesn’t “get” why it bombed. Honestly, it’s hard not to feel for her. Imagine starring in a movie with Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, and Jean Smart about Hollywood’s golden age—and watching it get steamrolled at the box office.
“I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time, and you’re like, ‘How is that possible?’” Margot mused. And look, I get where she’s coming from.
Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies, and it’s wild to think people slept on it during its initial release. Do I think Babylon could have a similar comeback? Sure, why not? But let’s be honest—the critics were not as kind to Babylon as they were to Andy Dufresne crawling through a mile of sewage.
Margot Robbie says she still can’t figure out “why people hated ‘BABYLON’”

Is Babylon the Next Shawshank Redemption?
Margot’s onto something: Shawshank Redemption did bomb at first. It grossed just $16 million in theaters, which is… yikes. But here’s the difference—critics were all over Shawshank from day one. Babylon, on the other hand, split critics in half. Some called it an ambitious masterpiece; others thought it was Damien Chazelle’s three-hour apology for partying too hard at film school.
I haven’t seen Babylon yet, so I can’t say if Margot’s optimism is warranted. But I get why she’s hopeful. Time has a funny way of flipping the script on movies, and entertainment news is full of examples of films getting their flowers long after release. Who knows? Maybe Babylon just needs a few years.

Margot Robbie Movies Don’t Deserve This
Here’s the thing about Margot Robbie: she doesn’t miss. Whether it’s Harley Quinn, Barbie, or whatever other various Margot Robbie movies, she commits. She’s one of those actors you root for, even when the movie isn’t your vibe. So yeah, I’d love to see Babylon become a cult classic. It’d be cool to look back in 20 years and say, “Wow, we really didn’t get it.” Plus, imagine the Academy Awards odds chaos if that happens.

For now, though, Margot’s fine and enjoying her pregnancy. She’s fresh off the Barbie high, cranking out entertainment rumors, and honestly, she doesn’t need Babylon to define her. But if it does? Well, she might just have the last laugh—and a way better IMDb trivia page.
