Apple Music recently released a new playlist, “Messi: The Warm Up,” inspired by soccer star Lionel Messi’s top 60 favorite songs.

It’s always intriguing when we get a glimpse into what celebrities are listening to on music streaming platforms. From former U.S. President Barack Obama surprising people with his love for sapphic indie girl bands to Messi enjoying bands like AC/DC and U2, it’s fascinating to see their musical tastes.

Obama has made celebrity news over the years with his playlists featuring artists such as Mitski, Boygenius, The Beths, Meg Thee Stallion, Kendrick Lamar, and Zach Bryan (shockingly similar to my playlist).

Now, Messi is generating buzz in soccer news by sharing his pre-game playlist with fans. As expected from an Argentinian player, his playlist heavily features Latin music from famous artists like Bad Bunny, Peso Pluma, Karol G, Bizarrap, and Grupo Frontera. He also includes iconic tracks like Celia Cruz’s “La Vida es un Carnaval,” which is a must-listen for many Hispanic households.

What truly surprised me were tracks like Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” U2’s “Vertigo,” and Rihanna’sDon’t Stop the Music” on Messi’s list. Although I don’t know a single man who hasn’t shed a tear to Viva La Vida, so I suppose it’s not too surprising.

In the description for the Apple Music playlist, Messi is quoted as saying, “Music has always played a significant role in my life, especially on match days. Music calms my mind, helping me maintain composure and relaxation.

Other celebrities who have shared their favorite music include Lizzo, Shawn Mendes, J Balvin, and Chris Hemsworth. It turns out that Lizzo is a fan of Ariana Grande and TLC, while Chris Hemsworth enjoys Imagine Dragons (I’ll bite my tongue on this one).

J Balvin is jamming out to Bad Bunny and Karol G, and Shawn Mendes’ summer mix features Drake, Weezer, and MGMT.

I just find it shocking that a former president can have diverse music preferences and doesn’t just bump the National Anthem on repeat. But overall, these celebrity playlists are refreshing because they give us a peek into public figures’ lives and help us view them as actual people, not just sources for celebrity rumors.

I’ll for sure be bumping Messi’s playlist today!
