Netflix’s New NBA Docu Series Premieres October 9th
You get to see them in their natural light and usually learn some interesting tidbits about their teammates and rivals.
Streaming services have turned to producing a lot of sports documentary series content following the success of projects like ESPN’s 30 for 30 and The Last Dance documentary about Michael Jordan’s Bulls.

We have also seen Netflix getting involved with NFL productions like 2023’s Quarterback and 2024’s Receiver, which followed players closely during the previous season with a detailed look at their lives on and off the field.
Netflix is back in the entertainment news with a similar project ready for NBA players called Starting 5, which will see its 10 episodes debut on October 9, 2024.

Who Does Starting 5 Follow?
Starting 5 will provide an unfiltered look at the careers (and lives beyond NBA games) of a handful of NBA superstars:
- LeBron James (Lakers)
- Jimmy Butler (Heat)
- Jayson Tatum (Celtics)
- Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves)
- Domantas Sabonis (Kings)
Are Boston fans going to complain about Jayson Tatum’s stats if he doesn’t get as much airtime as what happened with the Olympics? Tatum should be a focal point of the show as it will follow his run to the NBA Finals and win his first championship.
Poor Sabonis
It didn’t take long for NBA fans on social media to spot the polar bear in Texas on the list as Domantas Sabonis is not quite as popular or accomplished as the rest of the list.
How the hell did Sabonis make the cut lol

In fact, this could be like the Quarterback show where Patrick Mahomes was the star in winning a Super Bowl while viewers were quite bored with the segments on Marcus Mariota that were intertwined into the episodes. We assume, like Quarterback and Receiver, that Starting 5 will jump around each episode to all the players instead of devoting 2 full episodes to each player separately.
Sabonis might be the Mariota of this series if we’re just being honest, but let’s see if he can surprise us with an interesting personality and story.

Inside the Life of the Stars
But following LeBron James’ stats and work ethic near the end of his career should be cool. Butler and Edwards are always good entertainment and ripe for NBA rumors and social media reactions too.
At the very least, this will give fans some real drama to follow instead of AI-generated content with NBA stars cosplaying as Lord of the Rings characters.

I watch over 80 new series a year, so it doesn’t take much to get me to watch something. But I do like these shows as they feel more genuine than a puff piece a network does for the players. You get to see them in their natural light and usually learn some interesting tidbits about their teammates and rivals.
I’ll be watching in October, just in time for when the new NBA season begins.
