Oscar de la Hoya Is Pressing for Canelo-Munguia Fight

Is a Mexican showdown happening?

Following Canelo Alvarez’s decimation of another unnamed British boxer in a homecoming for Alvarez, the Guadalajara native may be lured to fight a fellow Mexican superstar.

At least that’s what Oscar de la Hoya is looking to accomplish in his never ending quest to be relevant in a sport that has defined and damn near broken him.

De La Hoya, former United States Olympian, World Champion, and victim of being gaslit by his own father (HOOO BOY the Legendary Nights on De La Hoya and Tito Trinidad), is the owner of Golden Boy Promotions, which once was the home of Alvarez, who left a few years back due to De La Hoya trying to be “all up in the videos,” ending up signing with the new sugar daddy of the fight game for any non-heavyweight, Eddie Hearn and DAZN.

The targeted fight would see Canelo, a super middleweight title holder, face fellow Mexican and Golden Boy star, Jamie Munguia.

“What's stopping it is that Canelo is not wanting to fight another fellow Mexican fighter, which is kind of absurd,” said De La Hoya in a story from Boxing Scene. “Because if you're a fighter, you're a fighter. You fight anybody who is on top. You fight anybody who is in your way and is going to create a major fight for you. Munguia is right there knocking on his door. If I am going to pressure these fighters to fight Munguia, then that's what I am going to do.”

Munguia has yet to fight at the 168-pound weight class and will do so on June 10th on DAZN against Sergiy Derevyanchenko at the Toyota Arena.

That has not stopped De La Hoya from claiming that Munguia should be next, and not longstanding names at 168 including David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo, David Morrell, and Demetrius Andrade, who are under the leadership of Premier Boxing Champions, which won’t benefit De La Hoya.

“I strongly feel that Alvarez vs Munguia, an all-Mexican showdown, is inevitable. Boxing hasn't had two Mexican warriors collide in recent times. Alvarez vs Munguia has to happen in the near future in order to keep Mexican boxing alive and thriving and bigger than ever. We have to show the fans that Mexican boxing is the very best. Canelo and Jaime, in the near future, I believe can happen.”

This is a moot point however as Alvarez wants to avenge a loss to Dmitry Bivol and aims for that to be his next fight, which as per tradition may land in September, near Mexican Independence Day.
