Who Made the Cut? 🔪
The snubs this year? Brutal.
Ah, the Oscars—a time of celebration, controversy, and enraged entertainment news headlines. The 2025 Oscar nominations just dropped, and oh boy, the drama is real. Leading the pack is the controversial Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations and right behind it are Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 noms each. Of course, we have a handful of snubs too. Let’s delve into who was honored and who was given the cold shoulder.
Ariana Grande officially became an Oscar-nominated actress for her role as Glinda, making her the pinkest, bubbliest nominee of the year. Meanwhile, The Brutalist—a heavy historical epic about the immigrant experience—continues to dominate awards season. These two weren’t particularly surprising considering the public reaction to both films (pretty much unanimous adoration).

The Snubs
The snubs this year? Brutal. Zendaya, who delivered a career-best performance in Challengers, was left off the Best Actress list, and fans are not happy. Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson), and Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez)—all expected contenders for Best Actress—were shockingly overlooked. Jonathan Bailey (Wicked), who was a standout as Fiyero, also failed to land a nomination.

Denzel Washington in Gladiator II, was completely snubbed. Margaret Qualley, whose performance as Demi Moore’s doppelgänger in The Substance earned rave reviews, also missed out. And let’s Robert Eggers (Nosferatu), who didn’t make the Best Director lineup despite his film’s dominance.

Other Surprises
The surprises didn’t stop there. Demi Moore’s career comeback is thriving—she’s up for Best Actress in The Substance, a horror film tackling Hollywood’s ageism. Speaking of horror, The Substance made history as the seventh horror film to snag a Best Picture nomination, joining the ranks of classics like The Exorcist and Get Out.
And let’s give a spooky shoutout to Nosferatu, which nailed four noms in cinematography, production design, makeup, and costume design. Honestly, it deserved every single one—it’s visually stunning. However, Lily-Rose Depp definitely deserved a nomination for Best Actress. That possession scene still has us all feeling uneasy.
