Poatan Saves the Day… Again!

No matter who competes at UFC 303, it doesn’t heal the wounds of losing McGregor’s return…

Unfortunately, the UFC rumors we first reported on Monday about Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated octagon return potentially falling through have, sadly, fallen through.

Late last night, company president Dana White delivered the unfortunate UFC news, and for those who’ve already paid thousands – some in the five-figure region! – to attend UFC 303 and watch “The Notorious” do battle with Michael Chandler; it’s an absolute kick to the Kahooners.

There hasn’t been confirmation on the precise reason McGregor is out; all we know is that the Irish superstar sustained an injury that forced him out of the July 29 main event.

Many onlookers began speculating about potential replacements; Alexander Volkanovski’s name entered the mix, along with several well-known top-ranked fighters, but the 38-year-old Chandler won’t be competing whatsoever… as the promotion is looking to book the fight at a later date.

All is not lost, though; don’t panic! The UFC 303 main event announcement following the devastating news left fans feeling happy and sad simultaneously, similar to Dallas Mavericks fans who are ecstatic to make the playoffs but are currently facing a championship clean sweep.

Alex Pereira vs. Jiri Prochazka II, It’s On!

Once again, the two-division Brazilian knockout artist and current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira, steps in with his red cape to save the day. His opponent? A familiar foe, Jiri Prochazka, the man who “Poatan” defeated at UFC 295 to claim the LHW gold.

It’s not the first time “Poatan” has stepped up to the plate; earlier this year, when searching for a viable UFC 300 main event, Pereira and Jamahal Hill accepted a short-notice clash for the title and delivered an epic ending to what was a remarkable landmark event.

Now, with only two weeks to prepare, Pereira defends his belt on short notice against a formidable opponent in an attempt to build a rapidly rising legacy like we’ve never seen before. When did Superman swap the blue and red for green and yellow?

The Perfect Fighter

What’s so impressive about Pereira’s acceptance of short-notice UFC fights is that he’s the world champion. Last-minute replacements are usually reserved for up-and-comers hoping to make a name, but “Poatan,” without an inch of ego – unlike most top-ranked fighters – is willing to risk his championship reign all for the promotion and, probably, a couple of millions.

Brian Ortega vs. Diego was also announced, another absolute banger of a fight. But I will say, no matter who competes at UFC 303, it doesn’t heal the wounds of losing McGregor’s return.

Now, more than ever, the Irish, who’ve booked flights, tickets, and hotels, desperately need to find some gold at the end of the rainbow… Let’s hope they didn’t drop $10,000 on those inflated floor seat prices.
