The Mac Is Back!

It’s all systems go. ‘The Notorious’ will be returning to the UFC Octagon this summer. – Conor McGregor

Broken bones, acting debuts, and business mogul duties are just a few reasons why the beloved Conor McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC octagon since July of 2021 at UFC 264.

But for those eagerly anticipating Conor McGregor’s next fight, it would seem we have an opponent and a time frame for his return!

Michael Chandler vs ‘The Notorious’ This Summer!

With St. Patrick’s Day this past weekend, the national rugby team winning the Six Nations competition, and McGregor’s return, it’s been a good month for the Irish thus far. Although I was born and bred in England, you best believe my 91% Irish DNA is bubbling with excitement right now.

Honestly, it’s not so much about watching McGregor in the octagon, but just his presence in professional mixed martial arts has been missed. Without the Mac in UFC news or scheduled UFC fights, we have to deal with the likes of Ian Garry and Colby Covington trying their hardest to do what nobody else can do like Conor…and that’s to entertain the masses!

The UFC and Dana White have not officially announced McGregor’s return; however, the man himself shared the news that he’ll be fighting Michael Chandler this summer when talking to ESPN. “We got confirmation a few days ago that it’s all systems go,” said McGregor. “‘The Mac,’ ‘The Notorious’ will be returning to the UFC Octagon this summer.”

Many have speculated that UFC 303 could be the event, but I refuse to get myself worked up until the contract is signed and the promotion makes an announcement.

That said, a summertime return for McGregor has circulated in UFC rumors for a long time, and the Irishman’s recent comments confirm this time frame. But again, the guessing game is pointless; UFC 302, 303, 305, and 306 each fall within the summer schedule, and we’ve already set ourselves up for disappointment in the past, so we should stick with “summertime” when discussing the return.

Can Chandler Replicate Dustin Poirier’s Success?

The biggest question about Conor McGregor’s record has been the back-to-back losses he suffered to Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier in 2021. Can Chandler emulate this success and become an even bigger superstar? Or will ‘The Notorious’ ruin his opponent’s Red Panty Night and send him home packing?

From a personal perspective, an active, rust-free Chandler would have a much greater chance of success. Unfortunately, he’s been sidelined since 2022 due to The Ultimate Fighter appearances and his initial opportunity to face McGregor; he’s been desperate for this contest ever since.

It’s no secret that fighting McGregor, win or lose, is a life-changing fight for those stepping up to the challenge. Both from a monetary and popularity standpoint, but winning the fight would be significantly more beneficial.

Is Chandler Fit For The Notorious?

Chandler has lost three of the previous four bouts, and his technical striking offense leaves much to be desired. Considering McGregor’s success versus shorter, stocky wrestlers in the past—Chad Mendes and Eddie Alvarez—it’s a great bounce-back spot for the Road House star.

There is, however, a lot to weigh up. McGregor is a meathead right now, and it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the muscle he’s put on since his last bout. Chandler is also a dangerous wrestler, and we know grounded positions—Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov—haven’t been the most advantageous situations for the former two-division champ.

Well, our speculation will soon be over. No more guessing games, McGregor vs. Chandler looks set for this summer, and I don’t know about you, but I’m pumped up for this one!
