Canelo’s Next Victim 🥊

Team Canelo continues to protect their fighter’s legacy…

Anyone but Benavidez, huh?

Whispers about Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent have circulated boxing rumors since his previous win over Jermell Charlo in September last year. David Benavidez? Jaime Munguia?

Of course not; why would the sport of boxing give us what we want? That’s stupid, right? And with that said, (not-so) breaking boxing news sources have hinted at Jermall Charlo – the brother of Canelo’s last opponent – being the Mexican superstar’s next opponent.

While Canelo’s next opponent hasn’t officially been announced, The Ring journalist Joseph Santoloquito reported that Jermall is the next opponent, set for May 4th, 2024.

When speaking with Mexico’s TV Azteca, Canelo said he’d be fighting an American opponent next, which ruled out Munguai entirely.

Sure, it doesn’t rule out Benavidez but don’t get your hopes up because there are zero hints that the 27-year-old is up next, as team Canelo continues to protect their fighter’s legacy and gives us even more reasons to watch MMA instead of boxing.

Expecting Canelo to fight Benavidez was wishful thinking on our behalf. I’m pissed just as much as the next person, but also, I’m not surprised.

Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) is the most dangerous opponent for Canelo. He’s done everything, and then some, to earn the opportunity, including a two-year stint of beating everyone in his path as the WBC interim champ while the man holding the gold ducks him.

No shade, but no matter how impressive Canelo’s record (60-2-2, 39 KOs) might be, fans will only become more frustrated if he doesn’t take the most challenging fights. But for now, it seems as if the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO straps will be defended against Jermall Charlo, should the rumors come to fruition, a fighter that’s embarrassingly fought just once in over two years.

It is, however, not all that surprising. Benavidez is undoubtedly a savage and the biggest threat to Canelo’s legacy. He struck a 3-fight deal with PBC last June; the first two go to the Charlo brothers, and perhaps, in a potential retirement bout, if we’re lucky, Canelo will finally stop the nonsense and strike the deal we all want him to.

For now we’ll have to continue betting on the favorite, Canelo Alvarez to win the fight, as we know he will; see you in May for another routine victory.

Peace!
