UFC 302 & 303 Are Guaranteed MMA Spectacles!

This past weekend marked a monumental moment in the history of professional mixed martial arts. The three-hundredth pay-per-view for the world’s leading promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, was not just another event, but a true testament to the sport’s evolution and excitement, living up to the UFC rumors and hype, and then some!

Preliminary action at UFC 300 was filled with knockouts and submissions. The main card saw Max Holloway deliver one of the best knockouts in UFC history over Justin Gaethje to claim the BMF title, all before main eventer Alex Pereira continued to uphold his reputation as the heaviest pound-for-pound hitter via a round one knockout of Jamahal Hill.

Naturally, UFC news was salivating at the countless conversion topics to unravel from the 300 PPV performances, but during the UFC 300 post-fight press conference, Dana White dropped a couple of bombshells on us regarding the future.

UFC 302: Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier

Around the midpoint of White’s answer to questions at the post-fight presser, a note was placed in front of him. He then began to announce the main event bouts for UFC 302 and UFC 303:

“June 1st, Newark, New Jersey pay-per-view, main event, Islam versus Poirier. The co-main event, five rounds, Strickland versus Costa.”

The reigning, defending, 155-pound king, Makhachev, has been absent from the octagon since his stellar 2023, when he defeated Alexander Volkanovski (twice) and collected a Fight of the Year award after dropping Volk with a first-round knockout.

Most recently seen at UFC 299 in Miami, Poirier returns after a statement-making stoppage win over rising star Benoit Saint-Denis.

The first half of the announcement was so huge that Sean Strickland, former UFC middleweight champion and the man who dethroned Israel Adesanya last year, will fight the ever-popular Paulo Costa in what could become a title-eliminator contest.

UFC 303: Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler

Media members attempted to compose themselves, but then White went 2-0 in announcements with knockout blows, figuratively speaking.

After the UFC 302 announcement, a short dramatic pause had everyone on edge before White delivered the goods:

“June 29th, Conor versus Chandler.”

While we already knew this fight was inevitable, given McGregor’s personal announcement last month, hearing those MMA rumors become official was a complete weight lifted from UFC fans eagerly awaiting McGregor’s return.

It’s highly unlikely that the festivities and excellence of UFC 300 will ever be replicated, but the UFC is certainly heading in the right direction. This summer already has people talking, and we’ve only received three major UFC fight announcements… Fun times ahead!
