The Gypsy King Calls It Day

It’s been a blast; I’ve loved every single minute of it. – Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua in the biggest non-title boxing bout of 2025?

Maybe not…

The Gypsy King, most known for his championship dominance of the heavyweight division between 2014-2023, recently suffered back-to-back defeats against the formidable Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. Just two weeks into the 2025 New Year, he’s announced via social media that those fights were, in fact, his last, and this bombshell boxing news has certainly knocked us down for the count.

Fury, aged just 36, has long been tipped to clash with Anthony Joshua, a fellow Brit and former heavyweight champion, in what could’ve been the biggest fight on the boxing calendar for 2025. Unfortunately, if Fury sticks to his word, said fight won’t be happening, and the short video he released on social media Monday afternoon confirms the rumors.

“Hi everyone. I’m going to make this short and sweet,” Fury said. “I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast; I’ve loved every single minute of it. I’m going to end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. God Bless everybody; see you on the other side. Get up!”

Is Fury Crying Wolf?

Naturally, many critics and fans are calling bullsh*t on these latest boxing rumors.

Pugilist enthusiasts will remember the year 2022, when Fury “retired” after defeating Dillian Whyte, only to return just six months later that year!

Whether Fury has genuine plans to retire this time around or not, there aren’t many people who believe the man who’s cried wolf one too many times.

Let’s not forget that he also “retired” in 2013 and 2017 via social media posts, and those statements, like the post-Dillian Whyte situation, were short-lived.

There is, I suppose, one key difference this time, and that’s the fact that Fury has now suffered two defeats. His invincible, undefeated record of the past—now sitting with consecutive losses—might be convincing him to hang up the gloves for good.

What’s the Cryptic Message About?

Many of you are now wondering what the f*ck Fury was alluding to when he said “Dick Turpin wore a mask” during the “retirement” video.

Dick Turpin was a famous English thief from the 1700s who would rob and hold up stage coaches on horseback. This is obviously a dig at the judges, who Fury believes robbed him in both Usyk fights, as the English Dick Turpin quote is used in conversation when people think they’re being robbed or ripped off.

This shows that Fury’s decision might be motivated by resentment. As a result, and like his past “retirements,” it’s now surrounded by doubt and sincerity.

Hopefully, this is a ploy to force boxing promoters to open their wallets for a potential bout with AJ later this year. So, don’t be surprised if Fury’s retirement video is short-lived, and before the year’s end, Fury vs Joshua is signed, sealed, and scheduled!
