Paul Skenes has been on quite a year to remember. He gets drafted overall number one in the MLB draft. He’s dating viral sensation, Olivia Dunne (Livvy Dunne, if you’re new). He was called up to the starting rotation with the Pittsburgh Pirates very early in his rookie year. He’s been named to this year’s all-star rotation. Oh yeah, and he’ll be the starting pitcher for the game. Picking just one of those would still make for a solid note on this year’s Christmas card, but come on.

Young Star
The now All-Star has been making MLB news all year and has really taken the league by storm. It’s really no surprise why, either. Paul Skenes’s stats are every bit of All-Star caliber. Since making his debut two months ago, in 11 MLB games played, he’s tallied 89 strikeouts against only 13 walks, maintains a 6-0 record with a 1.90 ERA, and is only the 5th rookie pitcher to ever start the All-Star game. Some MLB rumors have him as the betting favorite to win NL Rookie of the Year and even be up for the NL Cy Young.

Paul notched his 6th victory yesterday against the number 1 seed Milwaukee Brewers after pitching an absolute gem. Through seven innings, he had 11 strikeouts, only one walk, and an impressive zero hits allowed. Pirates fans would not be treated to the elusive no-hitter, though, as Paul was pulled from the game after completing the 7th inning.
In an undoubtedly tough decision that surely startled some Bucs fans, manager Derek Shelton decided to remove Skenes in the middle of a no-hitter, which seems sacrilegious in baseball code. However, Shelton said you just have to trust your eyes sometimes and he could tell that Skenes was tired. The last thing you ever want to do is push your ace too far and lose him in the middle of his spectacular run.
Paul Skenes’s girlfriend, Livvy Dunne, was later asked about the Pirates skipper’s decision to pull her man out of the game, to which she said she knows how much of a competitor Paul is but “sometimes you have to save the arm” explained the TikTok sensation. Hey, that’s more knowledge than some managers out there, but maybe as an elite gymnast, she knows a thing or two about the limits of the human body.

Silencing the Haters
Many haters and doubters may have thought Paul was overhyped heading into the season, solely because of his connection to Livvy. After all, she is a megastar of sorts, known for her looks as well as her gymnastics. Regardless, the two are cementing themselves as a new power couple in sports and Paul is certainly earning the respect of those who doubted him. We can all look forward to the rookie phenom taking the mound at the 2024 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 16th.
