However, fans eagerly waiting to see him in action during a Spring Training game might need to hold their breath a little longer. Recovering from off-season elbow surgery, Ohtani’s pitching days are on hold for 2024, but he’s gearing up to make a splash with his bat like he did during his 2019 season post-Tommy John surgery.

Despite being the highest-paid player in baseball, MLB rumors confirm that the Dodgers are playing it cool, not rushing Ohtani back into the fray. They’re taking a long-term view, focusing on his health and ensuring he’s in prime condition for the latter half of the season, especially when the postseason comes knocking.

The Ohtani stats are unreal but keep in mind that he’s never been to the postseason in his six years in MLB, so the Dodgers have to be creative in order to make sure his body gets used to playing in more games than usual, and that he’s rested for the games that matter the most.

The Dodgers’ Spring Training schedule kicks off earlier than most, thanks to the season-opening Seoul Series against the Padres in South Korea, which takes place on March 20 and March 21. But don’t expect Ohtani to be in the lineup for Thursday’s Spring Training opener against the Padres.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Ohtani will sit out the first game, even though he’s been making waves with his live batting practice sessions.

When will Ohtani make his Spring Training debut for the LA Dodgers? That’s the million-dollar question. There’s no set date yet, but there’s a buzz of optimism that he’ll be joining the action soon.

The Dodgers are giving Ohtani plenty of room to navigate his offseason workouts, allowing him to tweak his routine from what was initially planned. This level of flexibility is a testament to Ohtani’s star power and the trust the team has in him.

Roberts pointed out that Ohtani’s situation is unique compared to other veterans who’ve been granted similar freedom in the past. “He knows his body better than anyone,” Roberts told the LA Times. He also explained that Ohtani also knows the best practices for coming back from surgeries, as he’s done it in the past.

There’s no specific number of games or at-bats Ohtani needs to feel ready for the demands of the Dodgers schedule in the regular season. It’s all about ensuring he’s comfortable and in top shape when the games start to count.

As the anticipation builds for Ohtani’s Dodgers debut, fans and the team alike are hopeful that their patience will pay off. With a focus on his health and a cautious approach to his recovery, Ohtani is poised to make a significant impact when he finally steps onto the field.

So, while the wait might be a bit longer than expected, the excitement for what’s to come is undoubtedly worth it.
