Embracing the Unconventional

Vegan horse riding? What the f*ck is that? We’re gonna learn something together today. Look, millions of people love animals. That’s totally understandable, especially when it comes to horses. They are massive, beautiful, and majestic beasts.

Hey, give me a couple of Finnish ales, and maybe I’ll be ready to ride a fake horse…

Some people love them so much that they don’t even want to ride them. Those people are finding loopholes in how to pull off horse riding. Hobby Horsing is a sport that’s gaining popularity in Finland, of all places.

The sport involves people riding a wooden stick with a fabric horse head. If you thought the real-life version of Quidditch was lame, hold my beer…

Once contestants mount their stick horses, they go through an obstacle course. The sport is most popular in Finland but is also gaining steam in Australia. It’s mostly a sport that teens and kids play due to the fact that it’s much safer than riding an actual horse, but some adults do like to participate. I can’t fathom anything cringier than a 40-year-old man galavanting around on a fake horse, but here we are.

The Hobby Horse Instagram does have more than 24,000 followers, so there are some people who find enjoyment in it. Look, I’m sure some cultures think it’s weird that we watch who can eat the most hot dogs on the 4th of July, so I’m not gonna judge too hard. Hey, give me a couple of Finnish ales, and maybe I’ll be ready to ride a fake horse.

Now, when I first saw “Vegan Horse Riding,” I had assumed it was a way for animal rights activists to still enjoy an equestrian sport; however, in a surprising twist, this doesn’t seem to have anything to do with animal rights.

To think that horses used to be our best means of transportation. I’d love to see what our ancestors would have to say about us riding around on stick horses. To each his own, I guess. Regardless, the Finnish people seem to take Hobby Horse quite seriously, so more power to them.

Hi-ho, Silver! Away!
