You can’t take our country… – Justin Trudeau

NHL news has been put on pause over the last week as the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament has captivated hockey fans across the globe. The novel tournament concluded in Boston on Thursday night as passions were flaring during a 3-2 overtime victory for Team Canada over USA Hockey.

More Than Just a Game

Although both teams consisted of NHL players, the 4 Nations Final was anything but another NHL game. In fact, it wasn’t even just a hockey game; it dug much deeper than that considering the backdrop of unfamiliar tensions between the USA and Canada emanating from President Trump’s comments about annexing its neighbor to the north and threatening chilling tariffs.

The Canadians expressed their disgust with the Trump regime by raining boos down on Team USA during the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner in their first meeting in Montreal, a game in which the Americans prevailed, 3-1. Unfortunately, American fans responded in kind on Thursday night at the Boston Garden when O’ Canada was sung to its own chorus of boos.

However, it should be noted that those boos slowly morphed into song, with Americans eventually singing along with their Canadian guests. At least that was a bit of redemption for those donning the red, white, and blue.

Nevertheless, the tensions between the nations manifested in a palpable ill will between the American and Canadian teams, with three fights exploding in the first nine seconds of the previous game. The championship game was raw, gritty, and even a bit ugly, which was the most disheartening aspect of these past two games between longtime allies.

Trudeau Disses Trump

In case you missed it, Connor McDavid scored at 8:18 of overtime to seal the deal for Canada. Once the red lamp was lit, the celebration was on, and it was reminiscent of an Olympic win. It had the requisite nationalism underpinning and no doubt was a big FU to Trump and his treatment of Canada as second-class citizens.

“A lot of stuff going on with Canada and the USA right now, and us playing against each other was kind of a perfect storm for our sport,” MacKinnon said. “It was much more popular than even we would have imagined. It was getting so much attention from our whole continent.”

After the game, there was more political news as embroiled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trolled Trump by posting on social media, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”
