Commanders’ Takeover

Daniels wore a big smile and an Ovechkin jersey…

Washington Capitals games are rarely as electric as the one on Wednesday night, in which the Washington Commanders’ quarterback room attended and got plenty of time on the jumbotron, setting the stage for a raucous Capitals’ victory over the Canadiens.

Chuggin’ and Cheerin’

NFL rumors are swirling regarding tonight’s draft, but tongues are still wagging about the Washington Commanders’ stable of quarterbacks making NHL news by attending the Caps’ postseason game against the Canadiens. Washington would go on to win the game, 3-1, and are now up 2-0 in their first-round series of the 2025 NHL playoffs, with the teams scheduled to battle in Montreal on Friday night.

Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, and second-year man Sam Hartman were in the front row of the Capital One Arena, bedecked in Capitals jerseys. Hartman got the crowd buzzing as he downed a 24-ounce Michelob Ultra on camera, much to the delight of the 18,573 in attendance.

The quarterback triumvirate also tossed autographed footballs into the crowd, and a hockey game had suddenly become a raging frat party. It was one of those rare moments when professional athletes from one sport became regular fans of the local team in another sport. The crowd loved it, and so did Daniels, Mariota, and Hartman.

If you’ve picked the Capitals to win their first championship banner since 2018 in your Stanley Cup predictions, then this shining example of cross-sport camaraderie could be a good omen.

A Rising Star Meets a Legend

After the game, Daniels wore a big smile and an Ovechkin jersey as he made his way inside the Capitals’ locker room, where the league’s all-time goal scorer, The Great Eight, handed him a signed game-used hockey stick and galvanized a memory both athletes will not soon forget.

The Capitals shared a picture of Daniels holding the stick and proudly wearing his Capitals jersey while Ovie stood beside him. Daniels caught wind of the picture and reshared it on his Instagram story, captioning it, “The greatest to ever do it.”

It’s hard to argue with that assertion, and it won’t be long before Ovechkin may be attending a Commanders’ game, as September can’t come soon enough. The Washington Commanders roster is built for success. Jayden Daniels was the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he helped turn a 4-13 team the previous year into a 12-5 dynamo that vaulted its way into the NFC Championship, where they ultimately bowed, 55-23, to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Daniels is back for his second season after being named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and now has a shiny new toy in Deebo Samuel, acquired in a trade with the 49ers in March. BetUS NFL odds on the Commanders reveal they are installed at +800 to win the NFC, +1600 to win the Super Bowl, and a season win total of 9 ½ (O-125).
