[Carlos] you’re already a Hall of Famer and you already achieved so much. – Alexander Zverev

Alcaraz Outduels the Competition
There’s nothing wrong with Carlos Alcaraz’s stats or his cardio because if there were, he wouldn’t have even sniffed the finals. His gas tank would have been on empty long before that after a five-set marathon with No. 2 Jannik Sinner (2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3) before he stepped onto center court against the hard-hitting German, Alexander Zverev, in another five-set showdown.

Alcaraz would win the first set, 6-3, but drop the second and third sets by scores of 2-6 and 5-7 before putting the pedal to the metal and dominating in the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Alcaraz has now won three of the four grand slams at just 21 years old with only the Australian Open eluding him.
His opponent was graceful in defeat following the match saying, “You’re already a Hall of Famer and you already achieved so much. Not the last time you’re going to win this.”

Speaking of Alcaraz’s opponent, tennis rumors had been swirling about Zverev’s mental state entering the finals match after he was accused of unruly behavior by his ex-girlfriend in Germany and the mother of his child, Brenda Patea. Zverev settled the case by paying Patea nearly $218,000 for the altercation alleged to have occurred in 2020.
Queen of Clay
If we look at Iga Swiatek’s stats and list of accomplishments, we see that she has ruled the clay at Roland Garros over her brief career with an iron fist and did so again by winning her fourth French Open title despite turning just 23 a week ago. The No. 1 women’s player in the world dropped only one set over her seven matches in pursuit of grand slam glory and has now won the French in three consecutive years.

The quarterfinals would see her paired against No. 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova whom she dispatched effortlessly in a 6-0, 6-2 victory before stopping American Coco Gauff in straight sets as well (6-2, 6-4). Swiatek would find herself pitted against No. 12 seed, Italian Jasmine Paolini, in the finals who provided little resistance against the Polish princess in a 6-1, 6-2, romp that lasted just 68 minutes to take home the hardware…. Again!
If you thought Paolini might feel humiliated, think again, she knew exactly how good Swiatek was going into her match with her and came away even more in awe.
“Iga is playing unbelievable here; she’s taking the balls early and can defend really well,” Paolini said. “To play her here is something different. She’s already won four titles at 23 years old; these numbers are not normal. I’ve never played someone with this intensity before in my life. It’s unbelievable. She’s an unbelievable player. It was the most challenging match I’ve played in my career.”

Swiatek’s four French Open titles are only eclipsed by two women in the Open Era with the first being Steffi Graf who notched five during her career (1987, 1988, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999). However, the record holder remains the legendary Chris Evert who won seven French Open titles over 12 years beginning in 1974 and capturing her final crown at Roland Garros in 1986.
