Tiger Woods’ Disappointment

Tiger Woods’ silence on the PGA Tour’s recent merger with LIV Golf has raised golf rumors about his support for the alliance.

No Roar From Tiger

Say all you want about Tiger Woods and his off-the-course transgressions but no one has ever questioned his loyalty to the game of golf and the PGA Tour. And that sterling attribute is one of the reasons why Woods has remained silent about a back-room deal between PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan and his nemesis from the Middle East, LIV Golf.

We should also note that Tiger is a seasoned pro when it comes to saying a lot without revealing much. He has been in front of the camera all of his adult life and although he’s not necessarily comfortable speaking before an audience, he does it well and chooses his words carefully.

Therefore, it is not surprising that he has remained silent on the biggest PGA Tour news in the history of the organization. Tom Watson waxed prosaic in an open letter to Commissioner Monahan and the PGA Tour Policy Board, asking pointed questions without taking a pickaxe to Monahan or golf’s most hallowed institution.

But that’s not Tiger’s style. He understands the gravitas of the situation and how his opinion could be taken out of context or misconstrued. Even worse than that, perhaps he would be so vocal and pointed that everyone would know exactly where he stood, and that steadfast opinion could polarize him from either his fellow players or the establishment of which he is an integral part.

Betrayal and Loyalty in the Eyes of Tiger Woods

Nevertheless, the surreptitious way the clandestine deal was done has to be grating on Tiger, the same way it has on so many of the Tour’s players. There is a 16-member Player Advisory Council specifically established to offer opinions on topics small and large that could affect the players and the game itself.

But on the occasion of a seismic deal between the PGA Tour and the same organization to whom those players spurned by turning down enormous sums of money to stay true blue to the Tour, not one member was informed before the deal was struck. Undoubtedly, this is regarded as a betrayal by virtually every Tour member and Tiger is tops on that list.

As for Jay Monahan, he has temporarily stepped down due to a medical issue (stress does that to people) but he did address those who received offers like Woods but remained loyal to the Tour.

“Their loyalty will be rewarded,” said Monahan. “I’m going to spend every single waking hour as we move forward here, we finalize this agreement, and we move into the future, that the players that have created the PGA TOUR, have created this pro-competitive, legacy-driven juggernaut, that have articulated and supported the direction that we’re going on – ultimately the decision we made, I believe, is going to make it better for all our players, and loyalty, ultimately, as a leader, always needs to be rewarded.”

We shall see if golf news and rumors increase related to Tiger Woods’ opinion.
