Buddy the Elf, But Make It 2024 ✨
Iconic doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Will Ferrell dressed up as Buddy the Elf and hit an LA Kings hockey game this weekend, and let me just say: Buddy, you’ve changed. Sitting rinkside in the classic green and gold frock, cocktail in hand, cigarette dangling from his lips, Buddy looked like he’s spent the last 22 years in New York City—and not the fun parts.

Ferrell, staying completely in character (I think?), said in an interview that it’s been a tough holiday season, and he was hoping for a Kings win to turn things around. Spoiler alert: They pulled through, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 5–4. Maybe it was Buddy’s energy that tipped the scales, or maybe it was just hockey doing hockey things. Either way, Buddy remains undefeated.
Why Buddy the Elf Will Always Be Him
Let’s talk about Elf for a second. The movie came out 21 years ago. Think about that. A whole adult life has happened since 2003, and yet every December, Buddy the Elf makes his comeback like he’s the Mariah Carey of holiday movies. Candy spaghetti, syrup chugging, remembering how hot Zooey Deschanel is; it’s all burned into our brains.

And now, here’s Will Ferrell, out here smoking a cig and sipping a cocktail in the same costume. Iconic doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Hockey Game Gets a Holiday Crossover
The crowd at Crypto.com Arena was eating it up, and honestly who wouldn’t? Seeing Buddy the Elf scream for a shorthanded goal while holding what I assume was a whiskey sour might’ve been the highlight of NHL news this week. Fans on social media lost it because apparently, we all needed this weirdly perfect mashup of the Elf movie and hockey.

So, turns out Buddy the Elf isn’t just for Christmas morning. He’s also great for a Kings game when you’re still riding the holiday hangover. Will Ferrell movies really are some of the greatest comedies ever, and Buddy proves he fits in literally anywhere.
