“He’s [Sainz] a very fast unemployed driver…” -Christian Horner

Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has shaken things up in F1 news! Everyone’s wondering who will replace the legend at Mercedes. While Toto Wolff clearly likes Max Verstappen, there’s a new name gaining traction: Carlos Sainz. Could he be the one to step into those big shoes?

The Sainz Factor

Sainz has been a total rockstar for Ferrari! Since joining them in 2021, he’s racked up 3 Grand Prix wins and a whopping 19 podium finishes. He already won the Australian GP this year and is 4th in the drivers’ world championship. So, yeah, everyone was pretty shocked when Ferrari decided to let him go. It’s a head-scratcher for sure!

There’s talk that Sainz might be signing a one-year deal with Mercedes, with an option for another season. Kind of a weird setup, right? The buzz around the paddock is that this deal could be done before the Chinese GP, but nothing’s confirmed yet.

The Mercedes Plan

Sainz might be the hot favorite for the Mercedes seat, but Toto Wolff is eyeing the long game. He’s got this rising star, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, in their junior program who could be a future teammate for George Russell. The only snag? Antonelli is new to the whole F1 scene. That is the reason why Mercedes would offer that strange 1+1 deal to Sainz, giving Antonelli some extra time to get up to speed on that crazy F1 schedule before taking the plunge.

Lewis left a big hole to fill, and Toto isn’t quite sure who to put in the car. Should they go young and give someone a shot immediately without the pressure of winning? Or bring in a more seasoned driver to help them climb out of their slump?

This has Sainz sweating a bit. He’s about to turn 30, which might not fit the bill if Toto goes the young gun route. Will his experience be enough to land the Mercedes seat? Only time will tell!

If Mercedes doesn’t work out, Red Bull might be an option for Sainz! Their Team Principal, Christian Horner, was full of praise for Sainz’s performance after The Australian GP. Horner even joked that Sainz is a “very fast unemployed driver” after his win!

Red Bull needs a new driver for next season, and Horner’s comments hint they’re open to looking outside their team. Based on how well Sainz just raced, he could definitely be in the running. It’s gonna be a wild driver market this year!
