How could anybody forget the moment Shaq brought the whole backboard down?

Shaquille O’Neal is one of the most iconic athletes ever and most people think about his years with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won three championships and an MVP award during his time in Los Angeles.

However, before he was a Laker, he was taking the NBA by storm with the Orlando Magic.

Shaq was the No. 1 pick of the team and was leading the league in points per game by his third season. Unfortunately for Orlando, Shaq decided to leave for Los Angeles after just four seasons.

With the NBA news that the Magic are finally going to retire Shaq’s No. 32 jersey, we’re going to go through his most iconic moments in Orlando.

5. Becoming the No. 1 pick

The hype surrounding Shaq coming out of LSU was insanely high. The 7-footer was already thick and physical from a young age. It had to be one of the most hopeful moments in Magic history and he didn’t disappoint. Shaq’s stats were incredible from his first season and he led the team to the playoffs by his second season.

4. First Triple-Double

The Orlando Magic roster wasn’t exactly stacked when Shaq got there so he had to quickly make an impact in every facet of the game. In just his second year, he had a triple-double with 24 points, 28 rebounds and 15 blocks. That was tied for the second-most blocks in a single game.

3. Breaking the Backboard

How could anybody forget the moment Shaq brought the whole backboard down? A lot of these 7-footers come into the NBA and are really lean. Not Shaq. He was easily one of the heaviest players in the NBA upon getting drafted and it didn’t take long for him to make that known. During a game as a rookie, he went to dunk the ball and took the whole backboard with him. The NBA had to strengthen their hoops going forward as a result.

2. First Playoff Series Win

The Magic are still a relatively new franchise and were effectively brand new when Shaq joined the team. The team got its start in 1989 and didn’t have any success until Shaq got there. In just his second season, he got them to the playoffs for the first time but didn’t win a series. That changed the following year as Shaq led them to a series win over the Boston Celtics in the first round.

1. Reaching the NBA Finals

The same year the Magic beat the Celtics in the playoffs, Shaq also led the team all the way to the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, the Houston Rockets proved to be too much and swept the Magic but it was still an impressive feat for a young Shaq to achieve.
