Let the Games Begin!

The least interesting part of All-Star Weekend might be the actual All-Star game…

NBA All-Star weekend is finally here and there’s plenty for basketball fans to be excited about. I’ll be honest, I used to love the NBA All-Star game and all the festivities around it but it seems like the stars have just phoned it in over the years.

However, this year seems to have some interesting things going on. First of all, the Steph Curry vs. Sabrina Ionescu 3-point challenge is a great idea and I’m very interested to see the outcome. If Ionescu beats Curry, it’s going to be big NBA news that’s talked about for a long time.

Sadly, the Slam Dunk Contest used to be one of my favorite sporting events. One of my favorite memories was Dwight Howard donning his Superman fit and winning the contest in 2008. Unfortunately, we don’t see the superstars participate anymore. This is a contest that Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan won but it seems like it’s headlined by Aaron Gordon every year.

Luckily, this year is a bit different. Boston Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown has agreed to participate and he’s arguably the first true veteran superstar to compete since Dwight Howard in 2008. I’m actually interested in the dunk contest this year and hopefully Brown kills it so other All-Stars become interested in doing it.

I’m sorry but how have we not had Ja Morant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, or LeBron James do a dunk contest? Here’s hoping things change.

Another interesting thing to watch is Victor Wembanyama doing the Skills Challenge. I don’t know if we’ve ever had somebody who is 7-foot-4 do the Skills Challenge so that should be exciting. If he can beat out much smaller guards, that would be insane. We already know he’s a freak athlete but the fact that he has ball skills to go with his size is a cheat code.

Honestly, the least interesting part of All-Star Weekend might be the actual All-Star game. It’s always fun to see the best players from the East and West compete but the players don’t really take the game that seriously. It’d be great if there were real rivalries in the NBA these days because then these All-Star games could get chippy.

Perhaps in the future, the NBA can give the teams some incentive to win but I’m not sure what that looks like.
