It’s Giving Cruise 🚢

It doesn’t look like an NBA logo at all…

In a bit of NBA news, the Clippers unveiled their revamped look and honestly, it’s not a bad look. But they decided to lean heavily into the nautical vibes. Why? Well, do you know what a clipper is?

If you’re like me, you definitely didn’t know what a clipper was until looking it up. I grew up in LA and didn’t know what it was until a couple of months ago. A clipper is an old type of ship, hence the Clippers’ new nautical look.

The red and blue color scheme is still a good look but I’m not sure I love the change to more of a navy blue. The lighter blue is a good look and it seems like teams are always trying to make their jerseys darker. Now, the problem with the Clippers’ new look is the logo.

They decided to take a ship and wrap a C around it.

It just looks clunky and weird. It doesn’t look like an NBA logo at all. I feel like it’s trying to be clever but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with just a big C. I’m just not a fan of the little ship in the logo. It almost feels like an AI creation.

This is honestly what the LA Clippers have been so bad at. Los Angeles is a Lakers town and the Clippers haven’t done a good job of being able to stand out. One way to be different from the Lakers is by trying to make bold stylistic choices to get the younger fans on their side but this logo feels so uninspired.

The Clippers are in a major transition period as they’re set to leave Crypto.com Arena and move to the Forum where they’ll be playing NBA games going forward. They’ll finally be able to get some distance between them and the Lakers but I’m still doubtful they’ll be able to gain much of a fan base in Los Angeles.

I had somebody ask me the other day if there were a lot of Clippers fans in LA and I honestly replied to him that I don’t know a single Clippers fan. That’s 100% true and that’s not going to change unless Steve Ballmer can get a bit more creative with the franchise. Even the Forum is where the Lakers used to play so that purple and gold shadow will continue to linger over them.
